Three Bangladeshis living in New York have died of coronavirus. Two died in New York. Another went to Bangladesh to attend his niece's wedding and died there. They are Golam Rahman Selim (48), Abul Kalam Azad (6) and Shefali Begum (55).
At least 300 Bangladeshi Americans have died in the United States so far. Although many people were affected in the second phase, this is the first news of death. As a result, Corona panic has spread among the expatriate Bangladeshis in New York again.
Golam Rahman Selim, 48, younger brother of Golam Mehraj, a New York adviser to the Bashundhara Group of Bangladesh, was admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital in Astoria, New York on November 13 after suffering from corona. Doctors tried their best but could not save him in the end. Golam Mehraj said he died at the hospital on the morning of December 2. Golam Rahman is survived by his wife and one daughter. They live in Dhaka.
Abul Kalam Azad, 6, another expatriate teacher from New York, died on Tuesday, December 1. He was treated at a Jewish hospital on Long Island. Family members said other members of his family were also affected by the corona.
Meanwhile, Shefali Begum, 55, a resident of Elmhurst near Jackson Heights in New York City, died of corona while going to Bangladesh on the occasion of her niece's wedding. Shefali, younger sister of freedom fighter Abul Bashar, vice-president of the United States branch of the Sector Commanders Forum, went to Dhaka on October 12 with her eldest daughter. On November 20, his niece was supposed to be Akd. But before that, the nieces and nephews were attacked by Corona. As a result, the marriage was postponed. Shefali Begum was also attacked on November 10. He was later admitted to a hospital in Dhaka. He died there on November 29. Shefali Begum's other daughter and only son live in New York.
