Monster energy drinks have been linked to heart problems and a handful of deaths in consumers aged 12-17, allegedly due to the products' high levels of caffeine.
Back in 2012, the FDA investigated the safety of energy drinks. Part of their investigation included a meeting with four Monster representatives from its lobbying firm, Covington & Burling (one of whom, Jeannie Perron, is included on the venn), as well as the company's chief scientific officer, Thomas Davis, who offered studies on the safety of Monster's ingredients. The FDA issued a warning that energy drinks may have caused deaths and may be unsafe.
Energy drinks aren't regulated as food, but rather as dietary supplements.
Monster Beverage Corporation is a brand of Hansen's Natural which later changed its name. The Monster arm of the company was founded by Rodney Sacks and Hilton Schlosberg. In 2015, the various brands were acquired by Coca Cola Co.
