A shitty idea

in #creativity5 years ago (edited)

Seriously, do you ever stop to think what our world would be like today without any shitty ideas? No actually, let me rephrase that. I mean, without any ideas that were once considered shitty?

Because think about it, how many great ideas, how much of the shit we can't even live with nowadays was once considered a terrible idea? And look at it now.

This is something constantly on my mind as an artist. Why? Well, because it's in my nature to disregard most of my own ideas as shitty at some point. But I'm learning (slowly) not to give up on them, regardless how shitty they might sound at any one point, you know?
And this is true for most people. We're all plagued by doubt.

Why should I do X? Who am I to...? And what good would ti be? Nobody wants it. Or me.

It's easy to let yourself be convinced by the little voice in your head that says you're not worth it. And it's hard to fight it, it's an uphill battle, always. But one you must fight regardless. No matter what the voice in your head says.

I was just talking to my kid brother @pnodgaming about this. He's a gamer, really passionate about all sorts of computer games and it's a passion that's easy to disregard. I mean video games, come on...

But that's missing the point. Such thinking is completely beside the point. Because it's passion. And passion is rare. The other day, he did this image he was really proud of, all by himself, spent a few hours in Photoshop. His own initiative. You can check it out here, because he's on Steem as well.

And we were talking how the creator of his favorite game (Five Nights at Freddy's), Scott Cawthon, ran a kickstarter campaign for the first game, with a goal of $10,000. You know how much of that he actually got? Not a cent.
Today, FNAF is one of the most popular game in the world. It has several games, thousands (yes, thousands) of fan-games on GameJolt and tons of merchanside - toys, funko pops, plushies, shirts, posters, mugs etc. It's huge.

Now, what if Scott had taken a look at his Kickstarter page years ago and said 'fuck it, it's worthless, I might as well give up'? What if he had given up? So many people's lives were touched by this game, both kids and adults. And I get you might be thinking so what, it's a game, big fucking deal. It's not. It's a story told inside their heads. It's an incredibly complex story and an incredibly complex universe. As valuable as a book or as any piece of art out there.
And these people's lives, particularly these kids whose young minds were shaped by this game, they would've been totally different if Scott had given up before even starting, if he'd listened to that voice.

But he didn't.

And neither should you. Whatever you're doing. Maybe you want to write a book, but doubt it will ever be a bestseller. Write it anyway. Maybe you're thinking of building a model airplane. Who cares, right? You do. Stand up for your passions, for what matters to you.

Passion is extremely rare in this world. Learn to recognize yours and act on it. You never know when you might change the world.

That being said, it would mean much more to me if you could go on my bro's post and upvote that instead of this. Because it's passion and because sometimes, seeing someone cares can make a world of difference :) Thank you.

Thanks for reading,

YA bring up a ton of valid points here. Interesting thoughts and it shows that sometimes an idea needs a second chance.

Well is not just passion as I see it. It is passion combined with grit and perseverence. Is dream and action combined, passion is just the beginning :)

Very true :) But if you shoot the passion down from the get-go, grit and perseverance will never follow. Passion needs to be nurtured enough for the person in question to think it's worth the trouble.
Thanks ;)

Gaming is something I am so monumentally not interested in but I went over and threw him a 100% upvote. Because of the passion you showed to want to help your bro out. 😊

When we stop using a filter of 'good or bad' with our ideas then we can truly grow. It's so true that we need to just follow our own line of thought down the paths of creativity and let it lead us to our passions without value judgments. I think that's how we can find our true goals and passions @honeydue.

Agreed. Even though it's often very hard to turn that filer off. It's a constant practice one must keep up, I think. Because if you don't, then the little judging voice sneaks back in...
