The Red Dress - Micro-fiction

Jamie stood in front of the store looking at a mannequin in a red dress who bore an expression reminiscent of her sister Betty. Betty always wore a dress well. After a moment, Jamie went in.

The clerk eyed her, as if she had suspicions that Jamie did not belong. Jamie’s hair was down, and soaked from the rain. She carried a small sack with dog food for Freddy. Did she look unkempt?

She pointed. “I’m interested in that dress. The one on the mannequin.”

The clerk scanned Jamie the way one might evaluate a used car. Then she took an identical but larger dress off a rack and held it up to her. Jamie saw that it was a size 14. She was only a size 10.

The clerk sniffed. Her name tag read “Beatrice.” “I don’t think it’s your color.”

Jamie wondered what her color was. Would she ever find a suitable dress? Perhaps she should not go to the party on Saturday. She looked around the room at the sea of dress racks full of styles and sizes and colors. Why had she come in?

“There’s another one you might like. It’s on sale. Step this way.”

Jamie followed Beatrice to the back of the store. The sale racks looked sad and a bit dingy. Here were the picked over, unwanted items.

Beatrice held up a gray-brown dress with a high neckline.

Jamie straightened. “No. I want the other dress. Red, size 10. Red is my color.”

Thank you for reading my micro-fiction story. I crafted this in a workshop session I ran with several other writers, and then polished it to share for this week's micro-fiction prompt, "sale." It is exactly 250 words.

Greetings, @jayna
Good for her. So many ways this world puts people down.
It takes courage and determination to go against pre-existing notion of what should define us.
Beautiful inspiring story.

Thank you, @hlezama. Great to hear from you! I miss your stories. I hope you will join the new weekly contest prompt.

Thanks. Me too. I have tried three times, but the muses are on strike.
I finally came up with one story recently, but was a bit longer, I believe than the stipulated extension.
I'm looking forward to going back to your contest.

That darn muse. It just does that sometimes!

This is such an amazing story with so much meat and it touches my soul and emotion. Society, often, looks and judges by the outward. And this is so beautifully written.

Thank you, @iamjadeline! I truly appreciate your kind words! You made my day!

your story
Let me think of my sister
My sister is always dressed very well.
The whole family has to go out to attend the banquet
He dresses up 2 hours in advance
Still not dressed well
I just wear it casually.
1 piece of clothing for 10 to 30 years
So I often say to my sister.
A few clothes are enough
Casually wear
He always yells at me
But she is also wearing it Casually wear now - because she doesn't care now wear.

Relatives can be very strange!
