The exchange of medical data across different institutions is restricted due to the fact that the responsibility of keeping patients medical record has been entrusted to individual medical institutions and this action is protected by the Health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA) of the United States of America. It is quite hard to utilize data as the records are incompatible among separate health institutions.
Due to the increase in medical data demand, various digital organisations have attempted to gather information but they have not been widely adopted by healthcare service consumers, healthcare service providers and the healthcare industry in general due to the fact that they did not meet the requirements for an ideal healthcare information system Requirements which includes security, reliability and transparency.
Hence, the formation of the MediBloc platform which promises to satisfy all the requirements of an ideal healthcare information system using the blockchain technology.
MediBloc is an open source health care data platform, the first of its kind, bringing the revolution of blockchain technology to the health sector.
It enables patients, researchers, medical practitioners, healthcare providers and insurance companies have a fail-safe record of patient’s medical information that can be edited on the go. The MediBloc platform promises a secure and easy to edit account of patients medical records that can be easily accessed anywhere, at anytime and by anyone with the patient’s permission. The scattered nature of previous health records has led to great reduction in the quality of patient’s healthcare and as the process of accumulating medical data becomes increasingly tedious, there is a dire need for access to reliable quality data for medical research, artificial intelligence and other breakthroughs in the field of medicine.
MediBloc will introduce a cryptocurrency which will be used only on this platform, this cryptocurrency is named Medi token (MED).
Medi token will serve as encouragement to MediBloc users for their contribution on the MediBloc platform and it can also be used to complete transaction for medical and pharmaceutical expenses, insurance premiums and others at institutions associated with MediBloc.

Patients under health insurance who are registered with the MediBloc platform need not visit or make calls to the insurance companies to check the validity of their insurance over certain illnesses, treatments and general checkups, instead all the illnesses covered by their insurance would be part of their medical data. MediBloc offers access to accumulated data of medical records, patients insurance claim and insurance company evaluation can be obtained through “SmartContacts”, another subsidiary of the MediBloc platform. The platform will automatically bill the patient’s insurance plan once treatment is recorded.

A community will be created by the MediBloc platform specifically for patients especially those with rare diseases. Patients who are affected by similar ailments can share information on new treatments, qualified health personnel, other forms of medicine and other related things. Medical practitioners who are interested in certain illnesses can come together and engage each other in the social and virtual community. Medical personnel can be suggested to those in need of specific healthcare.

The data owner will give consent to the other parties to view their records in case of emergencies where the account owner is not disposed to access their records, all these which are not possible with the traditional methods of data keeping.
