INTRODUCTION

My Case Study

When I was about to entered the university to start my undergraduate program as a computer Engineer, It was mandatory for every new intake to go through a medical test in order to have a comprehensive health list of all new students in to the university. It was a good thing employed in industries and all kind of parastatals. This will help these industries to keep records of the state of health of their workers and all those who are under them and hopefully give an edge to future research of any form of pandemic medical situation that might arise from those who has done their medical test. But, during my first year in school, a lot was needed from me. Attending classes, doing a lot of assignments by different lecturers, and also looking for an accommodation to stay for my period of study. Therefore, it took me three weeks for me to have the entire necessary medical test being carried out. And I also missed some lectures that clashes with the time scheduled to meet the School doctors and Lab technicians.

When I was much younger, my mother take me to a medical center to have my blood group tested. But I have to do another blood group test in the University for record purposes even when I told them that I have already done a blood group test some years back. They insisted for a new one to be sure. A year after, I had malaria and I have to use the school medical center for treatment. It was so severe that I was taken to the school health center by my hostel mate because I was unable to walk by myself. Although, I needed urgent attention by a doctor when I get to the health center, my medical file has to be sorted out from the avalanche of medical files of other students in the university. I waited for two hours before I was attended to and this is more than a lot of time for one to die.

THE PROBLEM

From my little used case above, it is clear to how time consuming collecting medical information can be and the risk involve waiting any longer when one is sick. Patient’s files are kept in shelves that are unsorted that could take hours to sort for before medical attentions can be given. This is a huge drawback in the medical sector. Many lives have been lost while waiting for a doctor to check for their medical information before they are being attended to. What if a patient’s medical status (file) was mistakenly thrown away by a cleaner in the hospital? Will the doctor have to carry out series of tests before a severely sick patient be attended to? Will there be series of test for a sick patient by a new doctor in a hospital that did not initially take the said patient medical test?

According to the “medical negligence experts”, when medical records are misplace or lost, the hole they leave can prevent a patient from receiving the right medical treatment. These medical records can be due to carelessness of those working at the medical store or library or poor handwriting by different medical doctors and also negligence to record medical issues that might be thought to be not significant by medical personals like allergies, drugs that have reactions on patient’s body etcetera.

These medical reports includes handwritten notes, electronically generated reports and records, Scanned images, including MRI and x-rays, Laboratory results, letters from health professionals, and between professionals and the patient, signed consent forms and reports from monitoring equipment, for example, a heart rate monitor in an ambulance or A&E.

According to Dr Jock Mackenzie, a patient might claimed that he has done some medical test somewhere else (another health center) but as a doctor that knows his job, he has to be sure before any treatment can be given to such patient to avoid other situations that might lead to worst health problems.

“Investigating a clinical negligence claim is not always an easy job. One of the first steps that we have to take is obtaining a claimant’s medical records. This in itself can be quite an onerous task, as many patients have considerable medical records in a number of different places, for example at their GP’s surgery and in different hospitals, and the records are not centrally co-ordinated. This means it can often take many weeks to obtain all of the records, and sometimes months.” He said.

Across the globe, we know that some developing countries are finding it hard to have good medical machines or equipments; the issue of health records of patients has also contributed to death or fatal results in the medical sector.

MEDIBLOC: SAVING LIFE, TIME AND MONEY

The issue of the medical industries’ unable to keep medical records of patients and patients having no comprehensive knowledge of their personal medical statuses can be solved as Medibloc is introduced into the medical industry.

What is Medibloc?

Medibloc is a technological platform where patients can have a comprehensive access to their health information and medical industries can also have access to patients’ medical records with the permission from the patients themselves. Patients records would no longer be piled up in data rooms only were it takes time and sometimes tedious to find before they can be attended to. It is a Personal Health Record platform.
The Medibloc is built on the blockchain ecosystem for ease of accessibility by users due to the decentralized nature of the platform. In other words, patients can have all their health records taken from different health center in one single account that can be accessible by the patient itself and any other third party the patient thought deemed fit to access his/her health records either for further treatment of such patient or for research purposes to avoid future occurrence of illness that can be avoided.
Medibloc is more than helping patient to keep their own health records but a variety of other services that Medibloc will offer that will save patient’s time, money and also help in keeping their private health records safe from public.

Using Medibloc, developers will be able to create services using the open source API and SDK.

MEDIBLOC STRUCTURE

Medibloc technology is built on different layer just like a computer operating system is built on the kernel mode, operating system mode and user mode. Below is a short description of how the Medibloc layers function together. These layers include the Medibloc core layer, Medibloc service layer and the third layer is the Medibloc application layer.

MEDIBLOC CORE LAYER

This is the inner layer of the structure where only the user has access to. It is protected with encrypted keys that only the user can be able to access unless disclosed to third party. This layer can only be accessible via the Service layer similar to the Operating system layer of computer operating system software.
This layer has a backup features that helps in retrieving users data supposedly they were lost.

MEDIBLOC SERVICE LAYER

This is the intermediate layer between the core layer and the application layer of the Medibloc tech. It is transfer all information inputted by applications used on the Medibloc platform to the core layer for storage and back up.

MEDIBLOC APPLICATION LAYER

This is the user friendly interface layer where users can easily interact with the other layers of the tech. This layer contains images, written records that can be understood by users.

COMPONENTS OF THE MEDIBLOC STRUCTURE

The Medibloc DApp is built on the Earned Value Management (EVM) platform instead of implementing it wholly on the blockchain network. EVM is supported by multiple blockchain platforms such as Bitcoin, Ethereum etcetera. This will enhance it Interoperatability quality.

MEDIBLOC ACCOUNTS

The Medibloc accounts are of three types. Accounts for patients only, accounts for Medical personnel and accounts for researchers.

CERTIFICATION OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

Medibloc will ensure that medical personnel or health care providers have a good medical profession record and such record must be check and check again before they are assigned as health care providers to the numerous patients out there.

MEDIBLOC DATABASE SYSTEM

Since medical information can consume a lot of storage space, Medibloc will use Patients devices to store their medical information while the Medibloc Core Layer will handle the back up of such data.

MEDIBLOC TOKEN (MED) AND THE MEDIBLOC POINTS

This is the token to be use in exchange economically on the Medibloc platform and externally with other tokens. With these tokens, Patients can pay for services rendered by medical personnel on Medibloc platform.
On the other hand, the Medibloc point is a measure of how active a health care provider is or a user is on the platform. This Medibloc points will give reputation to health care providers on the platform. These include successful medical operations rendered on the platform. In other words, this is to show how experienced a Health care provider is. The important about the Medibloc points is that it can be converted to Medibloc token after a period of three months despite it is not an exchangeable entity with external tokens.

USE CASES

Case 1 (BILLING)

Jane had an accident at walk and she broke her left arm, and also having some internal bleeding. Jane was quickly rushed to the nearest health center for immediate treatment in order to save Jane’s life. Getting to the hospital, Jane had no physical cash on her to pay for the medical bill since the doctor demanded that Jane should pay her bills before she is being attended to. This due to the fact that many patients have come to the health center needing urgent help without the payment of such bills. Doctors have been considerate in most cases since it is the oat they took to always saved lives. But most of the times, when these patients get well, they forget that they owe some bills in the hospital and refuse to pay completely. But Jane has to be treated and the health center/hospital need money to pay medical staffs and buy more drugs as they want to save Jane’s life.

With Medibloc, Jane will simply pay via her Medibloc account using Med token. If Jane’s situation demanded that she needed some blood transfusion, Jane’s record of blood group is on her Medibloc health records. Doctors do not have to go through the stress of taken other blood samples rather go straight to the blood bank and get Jane’s blood group. This will demand great honesty from Medibloc in keeping such records because Jane’s life is at stake.

Case 2 (SECURITY)

Sandra is HIV positive patient. She does not want everyone to know that she is HIV positive because of the stigma attached to it. Even some medical personnel will mock her; so she thought. She wants to keep her status private as she takes her medication diligently to avoid spreading the Virus.

With Medibloc, Sandra can keep her medical status secret from the most people she thought will mock her about the virus. She decides to share her records to those she is confident in. This will give Sandra a more healthy living as HIV patients not only die from the Virus but also the stigma, discrimination attached.

Case 3: (Developing A.I for medical treatment)

Dr. Theophilus Omuabor is a medical surgeon. He also is a computer guru who wants to develop a robot that can attend to patients in the hospital without any human interference. Since life is involved, Dr Theophilus will have to program his medical robot with millions of codes in order for the robot not to make mistake while attending to patient.

With Medibloc, Dr. Theophilus can access millions of users’ medical records to program his robot. These records will be given to Dr. Theophilus by the different users who will willingly want to offer Dr. Theophilus such help. Since these information are human experienced, the robot can be program in the thousands of possible way to detect different kinds of medical issues in patients’ body.

Case 4: (Telemedicine)

Oki just came back from work and he is so tired from the day’s work at the power plant. He is feeling some stomach ache as well as waist and neck pains as a result of the heavy machines he have to lift while working. He needed some medication without going to a nearby health center than evening. Though he has some pain killer tablet at home, he needed a doctor’s prescription to take them.

With Medibloc, Oki can contact any available doctor on the Medibloc platform to attend to him without him leaving his house. Mr Oki can pay his medical bills even while at home and his medical records are equally stored for future references.

Case 5: (Automatic_Insurance_Claim)

Ejiro insurance company is doubtful that He wants them to pay for a health issue insured with the company without evidence or medical evident of the situation. He tried convincing them that he is actually medical issue he is having is actually true yet the company insisted he provide evidence before they can pay for such. Ejiro thought of the time and stress required for him to go through series of test that he has done some time back. He wishes he had a better option.

With Medibloc, Ejiro medical records are kept intact. These records kept are former medical issues that can serve as evidence of Ejiro’s current situation. Therefore, Ejiro’s Insurance Company will access Ejiro’s Medibloc Details to see that Ejiro is actually telling the truth about his current health situation.

Case 6: (Storage)

Dr. Theophilus Omuabor has a private hospital, there are a lot of files of patients in his data room of which sometimes very tedious to find a particular patient’s file from the thousands of Patients’ files he has attended to since he become a medical doctor. Even, he is planning to have another building erected just for storage of patients’ medical information. He wished he had another alternative to save him cost and time of building the new structure just to store patients’ medical details and also help to avoid the stress of having to search his whole file storage room just to get a patient’s medical profile.

With Medibloc, Dr. Theophilus would no longer have to worry about where to store his patients’ medical files. His patients will hence personal store their own files with their smart devices using the Medibloc platform. All he needs to do is to have an account with Medibloc and his patients’ profile will be back up for future purpose both for him and other doctors that his patients might want to visit for medical help.
