With ICO's you will need to use MY Ether Wallet if it is an Ethereum ERC-20 token. There are still a few ICO's that use Bitcoin but they are not as popular as before. Never send Ethereum directly from an exchange. Always send it to My Ether Wallet first. That is where the ICO tokens will arrive post ICO.
