One of the coolest projects that hasn't gotten any attention in this group - MakerDAO. If you're not familiar, they have actually created a decentralized stable coin that is created and burned based on loans - loans are collateralized with ETH, and the Dai stable coin is algorithmically created and forced to maintain value. Even in a catastrophic event, the system deploys an automatic shutdown in an effort to maintain value. All done on Ethereum.
Over $115,000,000 of loans have been issued already.

What do you think of Bancor network move to EOS, to launch the first Cross-Blockchain Network?
https://cryptolinenews.com/2018/09/the-bancor-network-has-moved-to-eos-to-launch-the-first-cross-blockchain-network/

      Max Lordminimal Fontana
they didn't move. they cloned the contracts on eos. the title is misleading. and it is not a crosschain network , it is a crosschain exchange. and it is not the first one. why people write titles with feet? or... do they even know what they talk about? Anyway I am a bancor lover.

      Steve Cooper
Yes 'expansion' is the term that should be used as opposed to 'moving' either way its good for Bancor and EOS.

Randall Crowder
It's time for another episode of WWWD, public edition. Those in The Watchers Crypto Brief are accustomed to my war-gaming, theories and conspiracies but for everyone over on this side of the fence, don't trade on anything I'm hypothesizing and DYOR.

In the military, we used to do things called AARs (i.e. after action reports) to help us understand what went well and what we need to improve on after an operation. So here goes ...

Nailed the beginning of the pattern repeat for a quick double in less than 3 days. However, for my near-term trade, I was a little bitch when I thought I saw a flat top triangle forming ... exited a small position too early, but taking my own medicine on taking wins and being disciplined. Given the state of the market, I was surprised to not see a pretty quick dump. And that's what got me thinking to myself ...

I said, "Hey Self, what gives ... what's changed?" And that usually leads to a theory that's probably not right, but still entertaining to consider. How in the hell did XRP's volume do what it did and never really suffer from a subsequent drop? The order book was crazy and positions were just mowed over almost as if entirely new players were involved. So that got me thinking about what often happens in the real world ... soft launches. What if xRapid is already in play and that eco-system accounted for the volume? I mean, FOMO is the most likely culprit, but what if it wasn't the only cause? Anyhoo, never mind the haters ... XRP isn't going anywhere even if it is influenced by a central authority and it's not a purists idea of crypto (i.e. nevermind the utter hypocrisy of not acknowledging that a handful of mining companies in China can certainly influence BTC, but I digress).

Oh, and while I have you ... don't believe the nonsense tied to XRP getting slammed by the SEC as a security. Most people are talking way above their paygrade and lack any understanding of the SEC or securities regulations. XRP has a better argument to be considered not a security than most cryptocurrencies ... because it actually has utility and is actually being used in the real world by real companies.

Anyhoo, I'm done talking about XRP ... back to your regularly scheduled programming.

What you guys think about EXP ? some bump incoming ?

      Marcia Lewis
I’m biased, but as a team member who is on the inside of all of the development going on and the excitement within our Discord community, I think a bump is imminent: Slips launch, EXPEX (DEX) nearly ready to launch, PEX airdrop, new Luna wallet—just a few of the developments. There’s never been a better time to buy.

MAKER DAO on Tezos (and other chains)?
by i-m

Maker is one of my favorite projects in the crypto space. There is a real need for a decentralized stable coin and it is the only way that we could do permissionless remittances on a public blockchain, IMO. I am also a big fan of the Tezos blockchain. So I was wondering:

Would it be possible to make a MKR DAO version on the Tezos chain in addition to the Ethereum chain? I see a few benefits for doing this:

this would expand the network effect of Dai
a need would be filled (a stable coin would benefit most chains)
no fee would have to be charged on the Tezos chain since MKR could delegate the CDP funds in order to generate a income for the DAO (win for user and win for MKR)
since it is the same dapp operating on both chains I imagine that it would be possible to send Dai across chains (burn 1 Dai on Ethereum then create 1 Dai on Tezos chain)

I realize that a MKR-like project could be made on the Tezos chain but to me it seems more beneficial if the same dapp is on both chains since the stable coin could be transferred cross chain (I imagine).

New to MakerDAO and dai
by Light_of_Lucifer

Hypothetical scenario to help me understand the dai and its benefits.

How would a hypothetical user leverage the dai to make money during a bear/bull market? I am having a hard time understanding how the dai is used as collateral. Is it similar to bitMEX, where a user purchases a long and hopes the price goes up?

A user gets a CDP at 100 usd, if the price goes to 105, does that user make 5 bucks? A little lost.

      fimp
If you create a CDP, you are not looking to leverage DAI. You are looking to leverage ETH (or another collateral type deposited into the CDP).

The DAI you receive from the CDP you exchange to more ETH. So now you have both the ETH in the CDP + the new ETH, so you are leveraged long ETH.

      Papazio
Some good advice here.
You could also mint some DAI from your CDP to buy ETH at a later date if you think it will decrease in price, like shorting.

Should i close CDP by 'shut' or manually get DAI, WIPE then FREE ? Is there pros/cons between the two?
by hansip

      Zarigis
The "shut" method will take slightly less gas since it only requires a single transaction. However, "shut" will delete the CDP, so you will have to "open" a new one if you want a CDP in the future.

Other than that they are the same, since shut simply calls wipe/free under the hood.

In both cases you need enough Dai in the account to cover the outstanding debt. If you try to shut without enough Dai to cover the debt or MKR to cover the stability fee then your transaction will fail.

What factors could lead to MKR outperforming ETH? (outside the bear market)
by IAmAStableCoin

If DAI is successful it means ETH is successful so what would cause MKR to outperform ETH? (As DAI grows in popularity ETH will grow in popularity)

Also it seems MKR outperforms ETH in a bear market but I'm wondering how it could outperform in a neutral or bull market.

      monkey_in_the_bushes
People will buy MKR when they wipe their CDPs, so getting more people to understand how they work and why they’d want to open them is good for MKR.

Multi-collateral DAI is also good since there are more coins to fund a CDP with.

Lastly, when eth goes down MKR goes up since people try to keep their CDPs above water by paying down the debt (which requires MKR)

      IAmAStableCoin
But currently the market cap of MKR is much larger than that of DAI so the impact won't be as significant as that of speculation. What I'm wondering is what will cause people to buy MKR on speculation which I think you did answer as well so thank you.

More feedback/comments on proposal voting decisions
by DashEmbassyThailand

Dear masternodes, Thanks a lot for your votes and comments so far on our Acceleration Co-Funding Proposal for a Self Sustaining Dash Embassy Thailand!

https://www.dashcentral.org/p/Thailand. We’ve already got 296 Yes / 58 No / 3 Abstain votes.

That's almost 350 votes + 14 comments with a lot of knowledge behind for the Dash community.

We from the Dash Embassy Thailand would appreciate very much if more masternodes could leave 1 or 2 sentences explaining their voting decision (yes why?/no why?). The 14 comments so far been very helpful, but the more the better. This provides an orientation on what issues we should focus more and where improvement is needed. This information helps adjusting and restructuring our proposal and our work here for Dash increasing efficiency for the whole community. Feedback is very important for us, as we want to always improve our efforts for the network. Thanks already ahead for your increased feedback.

P.S. I know everyone is very busy but I believe the other proposal owners would also appreciate every feedback.

The only question I was asked by the juror in the EOS Hackathon
by throwawayeoshack

"How does it make money?"

The challenge was to "create an application on the EOSIO platform that improves the relationship between technology and a user's privacy or security." My team created a solution for addressing EOS privacy, and we pitched it to 15+ mentors. None ever mentioned anything about monetisation despite the fact we explicitly asked them to help us with questions that may be asked. Most of them said they are very impressed with the application (won't detail because of privacy). In all workshops it was never brought up monetization.

Yet, the first and only question we were asked after we presented our app in round 1 was "How do you make money?" We said we didn't build this for monetization; we built it to improve privacy in EOS and help the adoption of blockchain. They said they have no other questions and thanked us for our time.

Before you lynch me saying that "of course they want money," I'm posting this because it was an odd experience. We worked 25 hours without sleeping and got positive feedback consistently without once monetization being brought up. Yet, this was literally the only thing that the juror appeared to care about. It's what it is, but there's a huge disconnect between what mentors advise us and understand the competition is about, and what Block.one higher-ups seem to envision for these hackathons.

Token cleanup
by strangedude59

I have 2 defunct tokens that show up in 2 different places. CETOS shows up in EOSFLARE and EOSTOOLKIT and EBT shows up in EOSTOOLKIT.

Is there an easy way to get rid of these? Or do I just have too much time on my hands?

These 2 tokens do not show up in my Simpleos wallet, therefore I can't send them anywhere.

      xxqsgg
If I remember it correctly, cetos withdrew their token from holders to save on memory.

      iPSCRISPR
They bought RAM early on for their airdrop and when the RAM price shot up they destroyed the Cetos tokens airdropped, reclaimed the RAM, sold their RAM for tens of thousands of dollars (maybe more), and peaced-out! No more Cetos, and I'm not sure how yo get rid of the Cetos token placeholder.

The EOS Mainnet launched 101 days ago, what have we achieved?
by eosfish

EOS Mainnet launched 101 days ago, and we’re excited to share all of the new developments and achievements that have happened along the way.

What has been happening?

We’re incredibly proud of what this community has managed to accomplish in a relatively short period of time, and we’d like to share some things with you:

EOS has become the most used blockchain in the world.

EOS has become the most used blockchain worldwide. Upon hitting a record of 9,441,232 transactions in 24 hours, operations on the EOS platform made up 48.7% of the top 10 most used blockchains. This proves that EOS is reliable, trustworthy and secure, and we’re incredibly proud to be a part of that!

EOS as a platform for building dApps.

EOS.IO is a free, open-source blockchain software protocol that provides developers with a platform on which to build, deploy and run high-performing decentralized applications (dApps). As of right now, there are more than 200 dApps being built on the EOS platform. This is precisely what we hoped EOS would be about and we’re thrilled to be helping out the community, while our dreams come into fruition.

a16z crypto purchases 6% of MKR, backing Stablecoin Vanguard MakerDAO
MakerDAO

Signaling their support of MakerDAO’s Dai stablecoin, investment fund a16z crypto has purchased 6% of the total MKR token supply for $15 million USD.

The purchase gives a16z crypto a stake in the first functional decentralized stablecoin and the only system built with formally verified smart contracts on Ethereum (or any blockchain). As a MKR holder, a16z crypto will participate in governance of MakerDAO and the Dai Credit System as it becomes the first decentralized autonomous stablecoin organization.

The strategic purchase in MakerDAO is one of the first from a16z crypto, the newly created, dedicated crypto fund from Andreessen Horowitz. The move was driven by General Partner Katie Haun, an accomplished former federal prosecutor who led the first government task force on cryptocurrencies and also led the investigation into the Mt. Gox hacks and into the federal task force investigating Silk Road.

DAOstack and Decentralized autonomous organizations: An Educational Perspective
Ceta Network

Why decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) are important and how they improve coordination among parties

Blockchain, transparent as it is, is not a substitute for human decision-making. It can keep trustable records and, through smart contracts, execute decisions that have been made. These are amazing feats to pull off without a middleman or arbiter. But they are not the same as running an organization. Governance protocols are needed in order to receive input from the human participants and produce output in the form of decisions. Which means that humans are required both for choosing the protocols, like for example whether they want a majority-rules system or something different, and also for actually providing their input on a decision-to-decision basis.

We could think of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), then, as the combination of a group of human participants with the blockchain-based protocols they agree to adopt.

DAOstack improves coordination among parties. It allows crowds to collaborate effectively by coordinating a lot of their decision-making indirectly, which is really the only way to coordinate when you’re talking about thousands or millions of people collaborating without centralized leadership.

IoT Under Cyber Threat: How Blockchain Can Save the Day
genEOS Official

For the past decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology has been quickly penetrating our lives. You can precisely track your delivery, talk with your mirror, fill your bath while on the way home and have many other amazing experiences with the IoT today.

The more of your utilities are connected to the web, the more control you have over your daily routine. This comes with justified security and privacy concerns: the technology undoubtedly makes your life more susceptible to possible ill will and more easily exposed.

Threat Evidence

IoT breaches already have a history to learn from. Two years ago, hackers conducted a DDoS attack on the heating system of two buildings in the city of Lappeenranta, Finland. As a result, the heating controllers were continually rebooting the system and the buildings were left unheated at a temperature below freezing. This is not the only example, but it is enough to demonstrate how vulnerable the IoT is today, and how grave the consequences of a security breach can be.
