Multiple Government Websites Running Hidden Miners

in #crypto6 years ago (edited)

One big scandal

Scott Helme recently posted this on twitter. The series of posts detail how these websites including .nhs.uk .gov.uk and .ac.uk domains as well as several US and Australian govornment sites have been loading the coinhive browser based Monero mining script into their sites.

Govornment sites affected by this third party problem include but are not limited to:
The Student Loans company - https://www.slc.co.uk/
Queensland Legislation - https://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/
UScourts - http://www.uscourts.gov/
Information Commissioners Office - https://ico.org.uk

The SLC currently down for "maintainance"

The reason for this mass infection, is due to a third party software provider called texthelp with their product browsealoud - it is essentially designed to make websites more accessible to people with poor literacy, eyesight impairments and dyslexia. Part of their code was spiked with this miner which will have netted the hackers millions.
