Eventum — Bringing Mechanical Turk-Like Crowdsourcing to Blockchain

(Discussion Video I did with a friend on Eventum)

For years I have used Mechanical Turk and UHRS (crowdsource work done cheaply over the internet).. you might ask what this is or means.. it basically works anyone can do and cheaply outsourced. Some tasks you may see on a daily basis on Mechanical Turk may be filling out receipts or identifying license plates for potential red light offenders.. or it could be just labeling/identifying products or determining whether something is true or fake. The problem with this system lies in the inefficiency trying to form a consensus. With Mechanical Turk, for example, you may have a task that 200 people are assigned that will be checked manually later and paid days if not weeks later. This method of doing tasks is now only painful for the employer manually checking and verifying data but its also slow, cumbersome and unrewarding for the end user. The problem exists when you have 20 people all answer the same way. Why not pay out based off of a consensus model and eliminate the employer having to pay 180 extra people? Why not remove some of the labor intensity of fact-checking and allow the employee to reap the benefits of higher pay?

This is where Eventum comes in. A borderless blockchain fueled consensus system that allows Employers/Employees the ability to work more efficiently without all of the manual labor.

HOW EVENTUM WORKS

“Eventum is a platform built on top of a decentralized network of reporting and validation nodes with blockchain as a court system. The platform consists of 3 layers: the core layer, the services layer and the application layer. Both the decentralized network of nodes, which provides the real-time speed, and blockchain, which provides the security and payment solution are tightly integrated into all 3 layers”. — Eventum Lightpaper

In layman’s terms it basically measures or compares answers to find a consensus (a high enough % of people agree) that the answer is indeed correct. The system penalizes you for going against the consensus (wrong answer) by liquidating your EVT stake and lowering your reputation so next time you are rewarded less. Part of the funds liquidated from wrong answers goes into the reward pool for those who answered correctly although most comes from the Developer/Contractor looking for the data. The quicker you answer correctly, the larger the payout..and the gains are quite exponential the quicker you respond (ie. you may receive 5x more reward for being 10th vs 100th) but also clearly important to answer correctly without some ambiguous system like Mechanical Turk where the paid work requires manual feedback that takes days.

USE CASES

Fake News (did this happen? ICO real?), Receipt records(Do these receipts match our records?), Red Light Camera plate matching(Was this the car that ran the red light matching this plate in our records, did they break the law?), Suspicious Activity (does something out of the ordinary happen in video), Sports Data, Live Events, Image Recognition (signs, pedestrians, bridges, etc.), Content Moderation (bad language, nudity, etc), eSports (who got first kill, who was in the lead at 7 mins, did Team BlueIce win the match, was this spot at this time a video highlight), Transcription (was this what was said in the video? Were they angry, mad, sad? Was it in English? bad language?). This can be used for anything that requires basic human observation and has an objectively true answer.

ALPHA TESTS

My own results from a previous Eventum Alpha event.

Rewards:
7,00,000 EVT
Reserved for Alpha rewards which are distributed in live demo events on 23rd, 25th, 28th Feb …
Many alpha tests have been completed but there are still some left. The events will require you to install Metamask (chrome/firefox extension, Myetherwallet will not work for this event because of how the transactions are signed), log on to Testnet, grab 1 ETH From the test faucet, and sign the transaction to join the event, a more detailed explanation of this is located here.

Once you have Metamask setup, the event will only take around 2–5 minutes to complete.
After an event is finished, make sure to claim your reward using the same gas transaction details on Metamask.

Alpha tests consist of one multipart question whereas I've been told Beta tests will allow for more batching similar to Mechanical Turk/UHRS format. Stay tuned!

BOUNTIES

3,00,000 EVT
is reserved for classic bounties (Telegram, Twitter, Bitcointalk …)

Divided into the following categories:
Referral to Eventum Alpha — 600,000 EVT (20%)
Reddit — 510,000 EVT (17%)
Twitter — 510,000 EVT (17%)
Facebook — 300,000 EVT (10%)
Creative content — 600,000 (20%)
Translation (bitcointalk.org) — 240,000 (8%)
Signature (bitcointalk.org) — 240,000 (8%)

It is not necessary to log or record anything using Bitcointalk (except applying banner for Signature campaign). All loggging is done on Eventum’s website which can be found here. Add custom hashtags if you are retweeting for the Twitter bounty because otherwise ,it will not accept your submission (most likely because it’s looking for your name in the address):

FINAL THOUGHTS

In closing, I think Eventum will give Mechanical Turk/UHRS/Crowdsource work a real run for their money. They have tactical advantages in requiring less Employees to find a consensus and less Employers to manually check their work. Blockchain in general is also borderless so there won’t be issues with currency exchanging or trust. Hopefully Eventum continues from where they’ve left off in the Alpha and really works hard to make batching work seamless for the Developer and those working for them.. an area that is an absolute disaster in the Mechanical Turk space. I think the foundation is very solid though and in a day where most Blockchain projects are priced purely on speculation, its nice to see Eventum with a working project even before the ICO goes on sale.

Nice presentation of Verity (ex-Eventum). Today is a special day for the entire Verity community, since Verity is moving from Alpha (on Ropsten test net) to Beta (main Ethereum network).
