Are Smart Media Tokens functional?

Steem's Smart Media Token (SMT) is a token protocol that enables anyone to create and launch a new token. I am interested in playing around with the token and was hoping to get a little feedback first from anyone who might have some experience with it - any problems, tips, suggestions to look out for when getting started?

A quick search revealed adult media site Vice Industry using an SMT but was curious what other projects are using it besides those listed in the whitepaper?
