The Mediterranean archipelago has announced its intention to use the blockchain to store the certificates and diplomas of all universities in the country.

In 2018, the Maltese government set up a collaboration with the startup Learning Machine. This collaboration is organized around a pilot project which aims to certify the diplomas of the Maltese universities using the blockchain.

According to MaltaToday, the government has just extended this collaboration over the next two years with the signing of a new agreement with Learning Machine.

The objective of this new contract is to extend the Blockchain certification system to all public and private schools in the country.

At the signing of this new agreement, Jospeh Muscat, the Maltese Prime Minister, explained that this project accompanied the ambition to make Malta the island of the blockchain. He also pointed out that this project has reduced administrative paperwork and ensured greater security for student data.

Concretely, universities will issue a blockchain identification number so that citizens can access their diploma via compatible mobile applications. The advantage is that the documents will remain accessible even if the establishment closes its doors.
