Following up to Monday and Tuesday's twitter teases about Obelisk, Sia Tech detailed the new ASIC today in a post on reddit.

The Hard Points:

  • 100GH/s @ 500w - $2499
  • June 2018 release, estimate -more likely sooner than later
  • 28nm full-custom ASIC
    • antminer style, fully self contained ready to use mining rig
  • Chip and hardware still in the design phase
  • announcement of decentralized mining pools for SC before miners ship
And most interestingly:
  • NO major chip manufacturer partnership
    • Obelisk is also the name of the production company, they are a subsidiary of Nebulous- the company that employs the Sia devs

Good news, or bad?

Hard to say. I think short term it could be bad for the price of SC. The reveal that there is no major chip fab partnership will likely be a disappointment for some.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Check the reddit post for more detailed information, their explanation of the release date is interesting. You can also check out my recent post on the reveal of Obelisk for more info on Sia Tech, and ASIC in general.

Now that the details on Obelisk are out. Do you think Sia.Tech will release a cloud mining service based on Obelisk b/c I don't think a lot of people have money to spend $2500 on hardware, especially when a GPU is already pricey on its own :) I would not be surprised to see such service to mine Sia especially if they suggest a theorical range between 100GH/s and 1.5TH/s for this 500W device. Something tells me we gonna see such service soon :) genesis-mining may be ? lol
