Can A Blockchain Based Model Prevent PIRACY?

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago

For decades piracy has been a thorn in the flesh for the film industry all over the world. As soon as a movie is released it is also available on torrent sites on the web. In some cases movies are available before release. This has been the biggest point of revenue loss for film producers. Unfortunately there has been no solution to it even with laws in place and strict punishment for violators.

There seems to be enough trouble for movie makers besides piracy for them to worry about. Other issues include leaks about the story on social media before release, negative reviews going viral on social media, and the actors creating negative publicity for the movies in some way or the other.

But now a recent offering in the crypto space promises to fix the piracy issue once and for all. It is a brainchild of film producer Andrea Lervolino who is known for movies like The Merchant of Venice and In Dubious Battle. The offering is called TaTaTu, a very unique name that is easy to remember. TaTaTu is going to be instrumental in stopping piracy using the blockchain for the purpose.

The way it is going about it is to offer movies for free over the blockchain and gain revenue by monetizing the platform. The main issue now according to Andrea is that most people feel that they are being forced to pay for something that they can get free if they look for it online. Hence many choose the free option that is available to them online.

Following the model that he has envisaged the content will available free using blockchain technology. The only difference will be that the platform will use tokens that will be made available.

Companies can buy tokens for which ERC-20 will be available and place their ads which will be the main method of monetization. The advantage of the blockchain will be that there will be complete transparency with regards to the content and its consumption.

Unfortunately there are may factors going against it right from the word go. The first is that piracy happens as soon as a movie is released. So people who are used to downloading through torrents will continue to do so.

Also, the main grouse that distributors have is that movies are available on DVD after a very short period of time cutting into the revenue that a movie would have produced if the DVD launch was delayed.

There are many people who don't like ads and they are more likely to download movies available through pirated methods. Ads are going to be the main monetization model for TaTaTu, so that is something that may not be favorable for it.

To conclude, although TaTaTu is likely to be a revenue model for the creator, it may not necessarily be something that may stop piracy.
