Skeptic?

in #cryptocurrency5 years ago (edited)

I often find myself reading some really negative thoughts about the crypto-space. At times, I accept them as people who don't get it, but lately I'm beginning to see things in a different light. This is to say that, yes, there are some misinformed people out there, some who have not question what makes money sound, but those are not the majority of the FUD voices in this space.

Motives or ignorance?

There are a few accounts out there, some infamous ones at that, who spend countless ours "protecting" people from the evils of cryptocurrencies. Sometimes they "protect" us from specific projects, but some just "protect" us from the cryptosphere as a whole, they do so out of their goodness of their hearts, and spend countless hours researching the scams for free.

Of course these heroes, like it's the case with the infamous bitfinexed on twitter, have the luxury of not having to worry about money at all. This is to say that they are millionaires in their own right or something, and thus can spend all the time in their world saving millions of dollars from being usurped by the "crypto scammers", which of course as we have established is absolutely everyone

I've had the privilege of exchanging a few texts back and forth with some of these financial vigilantes and have been blocked for asking questions. You see, they can't be bothered by a mere mortal like myself who would question their noble motives. Also two of them have guaranteed to me they hold absolutely no crypto themselves, making their opinion a lot more valid.

Is it clear yet?

Abandoning sarcasm for now, I hope that it becomes apparent how unlikely this is. In other words, there has to be an agenda at play, or simply such efforts would not be put forth. Not for a second do I buy this whole idea of selfless altruism as a driver, more so if it's something the financial vigilantes have been doing for an extended period of time.

I mean, put those shoes on yourself for a minute and explore with utmost sincerity the question: Would you spend years badmouthing something you are not involved with? If you are struggling to find the answer, which to me is painfully obvious, then I've not done a good job explaining this.

Unstoppable

The parallels have been drawn over and over, so it's almost cheating that I would do so again to finish this post of mine. But, in the hopes that you are not familiar with Clifford Stoll an astronomer who wrote about the Internet back in 1995 and got everything wrong.

I will quote one of my favorite flops of his rant:

Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople.

If you would like to read more about arguably the worse prediction in history, I found a copy of his original article On TheNextWeb, here

To his credit Clifford Stoll does admit his myopic vision of the future was comical to say the least.

Don't lose your north

Don't slow down, keep on building, keep on powering up, supporting initiatives you enjoy, giving others a reason to smile and feel empowered. Also: Don't get involved in fights, feel free to ignore the drama and build, build, build. We are living through some crazy times yes, but also times of crazy opportunity.

Lol - that quote. It's so epic. Every big change was welcomed with a lot of skepticism and it's fine. Let them be skeptic. That means more open-minded people will have a head start this time, leaving annoying and stubborn people behind :-)

We each must find our reason for believing in this future and lead by example no matter what they say. Not saying to go in blindly but consider the potential and follow accordingly. For me, the fact we can control what we earn and do with it as we please (without forgetting consequences) is a future I can enjoy.
