It's Hard Work To Get To The Top!
It's hard work to get to the top and it's no different for any cryptocurrency. That being said steem might still face a long ride to the top but it got the best chances to get there one day.
Multiple dapps are built on top of the steem blockchain already and several more are in the works. Some might eventually even revolutionize the whole cryptosphere, who knows.

Work is made easier with a supporting community - which I believe is what steemit has that many other projects don't. Just by posting on steemit you are helping the project grow, the same can't be said for other projects whereby technical skills are a must.
