Effect.AI addresses an age-old problem with artificial intelligence... Getting it to act human!

I came across a fascinating implementation of blockchain technology recently and started reading up on it on this post. The team at Effect.AI are harnessing the power of decentralised blockchain technology to train artificial intelligence through the power of collective human intelligence.

Effect.AI aims to solve a problem that has been daunting in the realm of AI for decades - developing AI that successfully acts “human”. This is an enormous task that takes a great deal of resources and effort. The solution is in the decentralised blockchain technology that enables the performance of a large number of small tasks in an efficient manner with a crowd-sourced effort.

By rewarding workers through the decentralised system, EFX can be issued to human workers all over the world, dubbed the Effect Force - the first phase of the project's development. This global team teaches and enhances artificial intelligence via the Effect "Mechanical Turk". The artificial intelligence thereby gains the ability to discern in ways that machines currently can not. Workers are rewarded with EFX for their work completing these micro-tasks that then enable better artificial discernment. As time goes on, the Effect.AI becomes more and more human-like in its behaviour and in its ability to discern.

Small tasks completed in large numbers

A simple example presented by the team is image recognition. At the present moment, artificial intelligence is incapable of discerning certain elements in images, such as the finer details and multiple visual stimuli of shoppers walking through a crowded market. Detecting differences between handbags, clothing, men with or without beards, women with hats or sunglasses, and so forth, is an extraordinarily easy task for humans, but not for AI in its current state. Human workers, earning EFX, guide the decentralised Mechanical Turk as it gains the ability to detect these unique elements of a given image by learning from human inputs. Thus, human training causes the AI to act more humanly.

Building software, one human or a staff of humans might work long hours for months or even years and still miss bugs in programming. But with crowd-sourced efforts of workers on the global Effect Force, even the most infrequent and rare bugs could be detected through a massive team effort. Even a crack team of highly specialised experts would have an extremely tough time competing with this global team of thousands working cooperatively to complete a given task. The Effect Force - a force of human and AI collaboration - enables work to be completed efficiently and thoroughly in a way that any smaller, specialised group simply can not compete.

Decentralised labour

It is these sorts of tasks that can be used to develop and guide Effect artificial intelligence. By rewarding users worldwide with EFX, Effect.AI can also provide income for anyone, anywhere in the world. This decentralises the labour economy and enables those in developing countries to earn an income that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Companies could, in effect, employ workers globally to complete tasks that would be performed efficiently through their crowd-sourced efforts. The payment of EFX would be fair to all who partake in tasks on the network; entirely transparent via the blockchain ledger, and would be issued instantly to workers anywhere. Effect Force could thereby act as a tool to lift individuals out of poverty in low employment regions. Imagine a family in an economically-depressed region making a sufficient income - enough money to buy food or pay for basic needs, or simply to achieve a better standard of living - by working remotely to contribute to Effect Force.

It’s a fascinating idea with a ton of potential applications. AI that truly acts human could be used to solve many useful tasks, beginning with image verification, audio transcription and data labeling - and that is only the beginning of this project. As the Effect.AI develops, it can be used as a computational platform for a myriad of complex tasks previously impossible for machines to perform. With Effect Force, the collective efforts of human intelligence will finally create artificial intelligence that acts like a human.
