Winklevosses Poach the First CTO for their Gemini Exchange from New York Stock Exchange

in #cryptonews6 years ago (edited)

So Gemini has finally got its first CTO, courtesy of New York Stock Exchange. The exchange founded by Winklevoss twins had till now been functioning without any Chief Technology Officer, but now that role has been filled with Robert Cornish of NYSE. Cornish used to oversee Pillar, the project aimed at NYSE’s Big Board and outdated electronic trading platforms. He was hired by NYSE in 2016 after first phase of Pillar’s launch got delayed due to technical reasons, and now two years later he has been poached by Winklevosses to manage the technology of their Gemini exchange.

Speaking about the hire of Cornish Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss said:

“He will ensure that Gemini continues to deliver the best platform experience to our customers possible and set the standards of excellence for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole. Rob is globally recognized for his abilities in leading high-performing engineering teams, his expertise in exchange and matching-engine architecture, and running high-throughput platforms that are both secure and resilient.”

Cornish is set to join Gemini later this month. Prior to his role at NYSE he worked with International Securities Exchange for 10 years and left ISE only after its acquisition by NASDAQ. Now it will be worth seeing for how long he stays at Gemini.

It’s also wroth noting that Gemini is not the only exchange to poach talent from mainstream financial sector. Other exchanges have also been doing similar things. For example, Kraken recently hired Jump Trading’s Steve Hunt as Vice President of Engineering, and Coinbase hired a former LinkedIn acquisitions executive to manage its own acquisition strategy.

As far as Gemini is concerned, it’s expanding to other markets besides US so it’s very important for the company to have its house in order for smooth expansion. From finances to engineering everything should be impeccable with no room for mistakes. Recently Gemini announced its expansion to Canada and also became world’s first licensed exchange to list Zcash. It was quite an achievement in itself because New York BitLicense regulations which apply to the exchange are very strict towards anonymity of Zcash and other privacy coins. The company has also been introducing great new features like block trading. Now with Cornish being in charge of company’s technology it will be interesting to see what other new technology features are launched by the exchange.
