Rapai: The Traditional Percussion of Aceh's Cultural Heritage

The Rapai International Festival is just over. This event was participated by overseas people, Libya, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. They came to show their best performance in this event in various location in Lhokseumawe. I mostly like the cultural event and I insisted to visit the location where the Rapai was held. Rapai is one of the most valuable percussion legacy that is still preserved till the present time and indeed, it also become an outstanding traditional percussion in Aceh. Rapai itself is included into the frame drum which requires the hand skill to produce the rhythmical sound. In the way to play Rapai, a group of players is consistently rehearsing to get the cohesive beats during the performance. It is not only regarded as an entertainment but Rapa'i also contains the philosophy and cultural meaning.

Rapai International Festival baru saja berakhir. Acara ini diikuti oleh orang-orang luar negeri, Libya, Malaysia, Thailand, dan India. Mereka datang untuk menunjukkan penampilan terbaik mereka dalam acara ini di berbagai lokasi di Lhokseumawe. Saya lebih suka acara budaya dan saya bersikeras untuk mengunjungi lokasi di mana Rapai diadakan. Rapai adalah salah satu warisan perkusi yang paling berharga yang masih dipertahankan hingga saat ini dan memang, itu juga menjadi perkusi tradisional yang luar biasa di Aceh. Rapai sendiri termasuk ke dalam frame drum yang membutuhkan keterampilan tangan untuk menghasilkan suara ritmik. Dalam cara memainkan Rapai, sekelompok pemain secara konsisten berlatih untuk mendapatkan ketukan kohesif selama pertunjukan. Tidak hanya dianggap sebagai acara hiburan tetapi Rapa'i juga mengandung makna filosofi dan budaya.

During this event, I paid close attention to the players when beating Rapai's membrane (made from the goat's skin) as if they were diluted into the beat. Each beat they made me stayed longer and persisted to interpret the meaning of any beat. They sat in a circle formation with a white blouse and sarong as a symbol to purify the legacy. They held Rapai's body softly with their left hand while the right ready to follow the Syeh (a leader).

Pada acara ini, saya memperhatikan para pemain ketika memukul selaput Rapai (terbuat dari kulit kambing) seolah-olah diencerkan ke dalam ketukan. Setiap ketukan mereka membuat saya tinggal lebih lama dan bertahan untuk menafsirkan arti setiap ketukan. Mereka duduk melingkar dengan blus putih dan sarung sebagai simbol untuk memurnikan warisan. Mereka memegang tubuh Rapai lembut dengan tangan kiri mereka sementara yang kanan siap untuk mengikuti Syeh (pemimpin).

In Rapai, the Syeh (the leader) is assisted by other personnel composing a the rhymical song, that is already arranged to play the constant while the others are playing the syncopate to produce the dynamical beats. Their body language followed the beat they make, while their head also moved to the right and left even they consistently nod followed the beats. Normally, the show is begun with slow tempo (Andante) and the beat up to the moderate then continue to create the rapid beat (Allegro) until it meets the faster beat (Allegretto).

Dalam Rapai, Syeh (pemimpin) dibantu oleh personel lain yang menyusun lagu berirama, yang sudah diatur untuk memainkan konstanta sementara yang lain memainkan syncopate untuk menghasilkan ketukan dinamis. Bahasa tubuh mereka mengikuti irama yang mereka buat, sementara kepala mereka juga bergerak ke kanan dan ke kiri bahkan mereka secara konsisten mengangguk mengikuti ketukan. Biasanya, acara dimulai dengan tempo yang lambat (Andante) dan irama hingga yang moderat kemudian terus menciptakan ketukan cepat (Allegro) hingga mendapatkan ketukan yang lebih cepat (Allegretto).

As you can see, the Rapa'i is laid on the toe, while the palm kept on beating. I was amazingly attracted with the way they hit the membrane, louder but delighter, the echo really influences people to enjoy any beat that they produce.

Seperti yang Anda lihat, Rapa'i diletakkan di jari kaki, sementara telapak tangan terus berdetak. Saya sangat tertarik dengan cara mereka memukul membran, keras tetapi ringan, gema benar-benar mempengaruhi orang untuk menikmati setiap ketukan yang mereka hasilkan.

All personnel raised their hand as the sign of the first set was over. It was done after the Rapa'i leader finished the singing. They made in unison which contrastively show the group remains cohesively. This traditional legacy is quite well known in Aceh, Indonesia and it totally moved me to renown the creativity of these people and the ancestors who have created this magnificent stuff.

Semua personel mengangkat tangan mereka sebagai tanda dari set pertama telah berakhir. Itu dilakukan setelah pemimpin Rapa'i menyelesaikan nyanyian. Mereka berbarengan yang secara kontras menunjukkan kelompok tetap kohesif. Warisan tradisional ini cukup terkenal di Aceh, Indonesia dan itu benar-benar menggerakkan saya untuk mengagumi kreativitas orang-orang ini dan leluhur yang telah menciptakan perkusi ini.
