Evening ride to test Wickwerks Ultra wide chainring (Yesterdays post)

in #cycling6 years ago (edited)

*Attempted to post this yesterday evening at 21:00 PST, but Steemit was down...

This is my evening ride after wrenching on the road bike this afternoon. The sunset shots were modified with 100% saturation to add color. I thought it would have more of a watercolor look...

The ride was 20 miles and 300 feet of climbing.

The artichoke pic was interesting, so I took another today, this time with a bee in it.

This is what I installed this afternoon on the road bike, Wickwerks 53/34 chainring, Sram 11-32 Cassette, KMC 10 speed chain and a derailleur extension.

Most road bikes around here come with a 50/34 chain ring with is called a compact. A step up from there is a 52/36 which is called a pro compact. Then a standard which is a 53/39.

I wanted an easier climbing gear ratio, so I put a 11-32 cassette on for a climbing gear of 34-32. I also did not want to spin out so much on descents so I now have a 53-11.

I rode to Quicksilver part. There are some mtb fire roads here, but get pretty boring after a few times.

Almaden is getting ready for the 4th of July in a few days

It was a warm day around 83*f and this evening was perfect for an easy ride. The warm breeze in the shade felt nice.

The Wickwerks chainring was great. I do not think there is another company that makes a 53/34 chainring. So if you looking for a wide range for your road bike, check out Wickwerks!

You finally got that chainring on your bike.

You have the widest possible gear range with a double. Only someone with a triple chain ring might have a wider gear selection. But it is rare to see road bikes with triples anymore. Heck even MTBs are going single.

What is a derailleur extension? Is it something to make your short cage derailleur work like a long cage, considering 32 is big. Can you share a pic please. Thanks

You can see the small back piece that the derailleur is connected to, that is the extension. A company named Wolftooth Components makes a few different models, the one I got is just a generic one.

And it does simulate a long cage derailleur, so instead of purchasing a new one which is like $85+, you can just get the extension for ~$10.

When a typical road bike derailleur is at full extension, it will hit the largest cog which is a 32. So the extension drops it a bit lower to accommodate the gap needed between the first jockey wheel and the cog.

Okay, thank you for this bit. I have wanted to go for a 32 but haven't only because i don't want to spend on a new derailleur. This will now have me sorted. Road bike can now go to the hills. Yay!

The day helped you the tour with a good view of the sky and atmosphere, too tasty and calm I can see. Sure, it made a little breeze that made you enjoy the trip more.

I love that sunset that is observed in the distance, I think it was the right time to do the click, like that flower that you could find.
