How does a child learn to read the clock?

Our children must be punctual at the latest when school starts. Well, if they can already do the clock. The only question is: how do you teach the kids to read the clock - as playfully as possible and without stress? The basic requirement is that your child can safely distinguish the first twelve digits.

To be able to read the clock safely, your child must be able to distinguish the numbers from one to twelve without any problems. This is often not so easy, because some figures are very similar for children's brains and eyes. So ten and eleven or even six and nine are often confused. You help your child, if you let it paint the numbers yourself and are not too critical. Preschool children and many first graders often write mirrored. This peculiarity, however, usually grows by itself. If your child can get the numbers, then it starts and it learns to read the clock.

Half hours - full hours

The clock is quite complex, so make it as easy as possible for your child at the beginning. It is enough if it can distinguish half and full hours for the time being. Go slowly. The easiest way is to do the first exercises with a homemade cardboard clock with two hands. The child can even set the different times and then read them. If your child has the full hours, then continue with the half, then the quarter of an hour. The tempo determines your child, but insist on practicing regularly once you have started.
