DISCUSSION TOPIC:
God is our Refuge and Strength

BIBLE READING:
Psalm 46

Qs. 2, 7. See Questions HERE.

DISCUSSION:

It is reported that in 1994 an earthquake with magnitude 6.9 hit Kobe, Japan. It caused 5,480 deaths, over 150 billion dollars of damage and a major disruption of Japan's economy with global impacts. What, therefore, will make the Psalmist so confident such that he could say, "We will not fear the earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea" (v. 2, NLT)?

This Psalm is believed to habe been written as a result of the miraculous deliverance of Jerusalem when it was besieged by the Asyrians under the leadership of King Sennacherib (see 2 Kings 18:13 - 19:35). God is still in the business of delivering his own out of trouble that may come their way. God will not forsake them that trust in him. He will maintain his own cause; and, if any of his own should at any time be attacked, he will speedily provide help. He remains our eternal refuge and strength. By the hand of God nations are brought down and "wars cease to the ends of the earth" (v.8; cf. Job 12:23). Notice what he requires of us in any situation (v.10). How do you celebrate God's deliverance from a sticky situation and/or when he shows you his acts of mercies?

Thought:

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come;
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home. (Golden Bells #346)

Prayer:

Lord in your power, disperse every stormy blast and expel the night of darkness in my life.
