Max The Cat - Behavioural Changes

Max has been acting strangely of late, he has become more vocal than usual, seems a bit restless and has taken to jumping from the bed onto the computer desk in the middle of the night and walking amongst my paperwork and laptop. Today he just sat there glaring at me and each time I moved him he just went straight back to the desk.

He's 17 years old and the only other new behaviour of his relates to his toilet habits - it's the middle of winter here and understandably an old bloke like him doesn't want to go outside on a rainy night where the temperature averages around 0 degrees celsius. We set up a litter tray for him in the bathroom but we are still having trouble getting him to actually go IN the litter tray, not just next to it (apparently he has been toilet trained in the past and used a litter tray with no problems). I bought different litter today (recommended by a friend at work who has indoor cats) so we'll see how that goes and hopefully, we can settle him down for the rest of winter so that we are all happy sharing our living space.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions to help us understand him a bit better right now I would be happy for any and all info on offer.
