Deep Dark Woods

This week's theme was deep dark woods. Well, where I grew up, there were plenty of woods and we went hiking there every weekend. But here in San Diego, not so much.
Yes, there are areas in the local mountains where trees can be found but it takes a bit of a drive and a hike to get there. All good things to do - but I didn't have time in the 5 days we had to fulfill this post.
I have some big, beautiful trees on my property. But they are apart from each other and one tree does not really count as the deep dark woods.
The only area I have where one could have the illusion of being in a forest of sorts is my banana patch.
I know, I know. Bananas are not even trees. They are gigantic herbaceous plants. But, they create a bit of a jungle.
The picture above is a look from one side - watch out for the cactus when you step in.
- Fun fact: My grandsons wanted to build their clubhouse under the cactus. It took a bit of persuasion to convince them that this might not be a good idea 😎🌵
Stepping into the banana circle is a bit like entering another world - like stepping into a forest is.
Looking up, you see the sky a bit, but looking around, it is all leaves. Many of them are brown and hanging down - a testament to the windy cold weather we have been having lately.
The dead leaves are protecting the new green growth coming up from the middle.
So, that is my deep dark forest in my yard - home to many, many critters.
All photos were taken with an iPhone 6 and slightly edited in iPhoto.
