"Transplanted Memory"

in #destasteem6 years ago
In a new study, which is aimed at studying the simplest form of memory, neurobiologists from the University of California, Los Angeles, managed to transfer "memories" from one cochlea to another by injection.

Aplysia californica (sea hare) - this kind of snail, if it is slightly shaken with an electric current, eventually acquires a conditioned reflex, it freezes in a defensive pose. It is this kind of sensitization that has been transplanted into other snails with the help of injections.

According to the researchers, experiments show that some parts of memory are fixed in RNA, and not in the connections of brain cells. This conclusion is somewhat contradictory to the dominant theory about the device of memory.

** "What we are talking about is very specific types of memory. Not those who report what happened to me on my fifth birthday, or who is the president of the United States, "said David Glanzmann, whose study was published in the journal eNeuro. **

The academic community is not yet in a hurry to accept the hypothesis of American neuroscientists. Many believe that this is not a memory transfer, but something else.

"Obviously, further work is needed to determine whether these changes are strong and what are the main mechanisms," said Professor Seralynn Vann of the University of Cardiff. "Besides, this shellfish is, of course, a fantastic model for studying basic neuroscience, but we must be very careful in comparison with the processes of human memory, which are much more difficult."

Wait and see.
