<Literature Review> Can Extreme Poverty Be Eliminated?

We’re back today with some insightful knowledge from the famous American Economist Jeffrey D. Sachs. Professor Sachs graduated from Harvard and now teaches at Columbia, leading discussions on pretty much all things economics.
Some while back, Sachs wrote an article titled Can Extreme Poverty Be Eliminated. There, he explains that there is a poverty trap in the poorest regions of the world, where “they lack the financial means to make the necessary investments in infrastructure, education, health care systems and other vital needs.”

That being said, he doesn’t leave us with despair. Sachs argues that “technology can offset [geographic factors]”, which is considered at least as important a source as good governance. Malaria can be contained with bed nets, drip irrigation can resolve nutrient-depleted soil, and landlocked countries can be connected via highways, airports, and fiber-optic cables.
In other words, Sachs points out that in order to extricate the poorest parts of the world from poverty, we must move away aid in the form of “technical cooperation” (which ends up fattening the paychecks of consultants), and veer our efforts toward investing in systems that improve health, nutrition, food production, and transport.
