RE: Restoring a 100 Year Old Concrete Beach House

in #diy6 years ago

great article!

Im glad your family did not decide to demolish it, but your house brings up a very important point about concrete homes. It isnt an uncommon sight to see reinforced concrete "delaminate" (the technical term when concrete has spalled off due to the rust of the underlying) if uncared for, especially in beach front conditions. We have known for many years that this would happen, but it isnt commonly practice to build for 100 years anymore, much less 75 or 50. Yet your structure has stood the test of time with little to no care. Imagine how long it would last otherwise!

With that said, the house looks great and your island home seems tiny! Wherebout in jersey is that? I live in NYC and visit south jersey from time to time. Normally I'm near Toms River to ride my dirt bike or ocean city because my friend has a beach house down there!

Strathmere is just south of Ocean City. It is on the north end of the island that Sea Isle City on its south end.

This picture is from Ocean City looking south.
