Our Boat Broke Down in Dominican Republic - DLive video

in #dlive6 years ago (edited)

It's day number 3 here in the Dominican Republic, hanging out and going on adventures with Fun for Louis. See day 1 and day 2 here.

We got a late start to this day because we didn't have anything planned for it so some of us slept in while others of us had breakfast and talked and hung out at the Dominican Treehouse Village.

We asked some of the staff if there was a way we could get out onto the water that day. It was hard to find anything that might take you out in the afternoon but they found someone eventually. We drove into Samana to meet up with them and they took us to their boat a couple kilometers out of town.

It didn't look like any nice kind of boat, but this is the DR. Not a lot of fancy things here. Once we were on the boat, we noticed that they started tinkering with the outboard motor. Was there a problem? Then they took the cover off the engine and we were like, "something is definitely not working." How long will we have to wait here?

Some of the other guys on shore swam out to our boat to either see what was wrong or just to join in on the underpants party we had going on in the boat.

Eventually, they jumped onto the boat next to us to take the battery off of it to put and connect it to the one we were on. I guess they owned that boat too. Why didn't we just take that one? It's bigger and nicer and more comfy! Oh, well.

They got the engine fired up after hooking up the other battery and we were on our way. But then we realized we still didn't know where they were taking us. Communication was minimal since none of our Spanish is very good.

They drove us out to the middle of the bay and dropped anchor. There was nothing around us. Why are we stopping? Earlier we heard of a shipwreck that was good for snorkeling so we were pretty sure that was it. Oh, look. They brought out snorkels. Perfect. Let's get in.

We jumped in the water and we couldn't see a dang thing. It was really cloudy so the water was dark but it was also murky for God knows why. Welp, that wasn't as grand as we were hoping. We asked them to drive us to a nearby island that is popular for day-trippers to lounge at because of the beautiful beach. Louis sent his drone up to get some epic shots of the boat and the island. That was going well until he set it to circle the boat automatically and it ended up hitting a palm tree on the island. Drat! But it still worked fine after that and the footage saved. Yay!

At that point we had to go back to shore because there was a lightning storm on the horizon and looked like it was moving in pretty quick.

With so many things going wrong with this boat ride, from the engine failure to the snorkeling failure to the crashed drone to the early ending... it felt like we didn't get our money's worth. But the guy that we gave the money to left before all this stuff even happened and we didn't see him again. We let the hotel staff know what happened. They were sympathetic but there wasn't really anything they could do at that point. We just chocked it up to all part of living the adventure. You win some, you lose some. But even the fails make good stories (and videos).

My next video will be my last day in the DR and going on one last micro-adventure.

Have you ever had a bummer tour?

Another awesome adventure and great vid @daveonarrival!!! Thanks for sharing that.
Unfortunately I have not been on enough tours to have had a bummer one.

You should host some photo tours, Scott.

I've thought about it plenty but that would mean I wouldn't really be shooting, instead I'd be helping others shoot. Not sure I'd be able to handle that during a nice sunset haha! But I've gone out shooting with other people plenty, no charge, that way there is no pressure and I can do my thing. Have a great day Dave!

Haha I remember watching Louis vlog of this too !!

Yeah, kind of a crazy day.
