Happiness/Freedom - What Do These Words Really Mean?

Does one come before the other? Does a person need to be happy to be truly free? It would seem so. Does someone need to be free to be happy? Well, if you're not free at least in your mind, then how can you be happy?

What does "happy" mean? Etymologically related to words like "happen" and "haphazard" and "happenstance," contrary to modern connotations, the word's root meaning seems to be one of going with the flow of life and rolling with the punches and joys as they come.

What do you think? Did my meandering ramble about the nature of these two wonderful things--happiness and freedom--make any sense at all? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Interesting discussion Graham — seems to me there are a lot of possible permutations here!

From a personal perspective, the two are rather entwined... in the pursuit and discovery of happiness, there comes an attendant freedom. I take some series of steps that lead to my being happy, and that turns out to be really freeing! In most aspects of culture, I think people think of "happiness" as a goal to seek and attain... and unless you're somehow a prisoner (not just behind bars, but in an emotional/psychological jail, as well), we seldom seek freedom... we seek happiness, and freedom is a joyous consequence.

Does a person need to be happy to be truly free?

both of them are rights of every human...

Agreed. The pursuit of happiness, and freedom to be in charge of one's own life.

nice video and nice words @kafkanarchy84. for me freedom/happy is i can feel free to do anything, anywhere and anytime. i mean this is not for bad thing just for good thing. Like in steemit, i can write anything i want and share every photo i have.
happy weekend kafka

Happy weekend to you as well! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I like your definitions!

you are welcome

That's an interesting take on the etymological connotations of the word happy. Gives me a lot to think about.

I'm all filled up with hap!

I love it.

Both are the incredible to each other, absence of one makes the other inactive and empty. We are living here for the aqusition to both, which means a lot for living a healthy lifestyle. And thank you so much for your great effort to explain the the topic with the example of eggs and chicken. Have a great day friend happy steeming.

Happiness and Freedom both are one of the best things in this world thanks for this post @kafkanarchy84

Depending on the philosophy you can interpret freedom as "free to" or "free of" and I think getting the right one of them is at least impart the key to happiness: You can be free to do or be anything and still hate your life. But if you're free of having to do or see or be things that you don't like, you are one step away of being happy.

Maximizing individual liberty and still being secure as possible is happiness to me.
