Oof. That is a lot of people. Made sense to have two parties.
I used to play D&D with my friends (in person and through Discord). There were 6 persons in our party and it was challenging to get a smooth game going.
We played the 5th edition.
Honestly, 4E would probably be easier to manage online.
We used Fantasy Grounds as the basis for all our online interactions.
