Today I had a friend ask me about his domain names on GoDaddy. He uses all of his for various projects and he noticed today that GoDaddy is now showing users an Estimated Value. This is just another use of their appraisal tool that they made available to the public several months ago. Personally, I like the implementation of it here. I think it's good for non domainers to see that they may have domains worth money. We need more non investors to see the value and to start understanding domain names as an investment. It would be nice to not have to explain it so often when a potential buyer comes along.
Recently, I had an offer on one of my domain names. I was asking $2,500 dollars and the buyer offered $100. They said that they couldn't understand how I could ask so much when I only paid a registration fee of around $10 dollars. They didn't think it was fair to pay more than I paid. Now, I don't always go into details explaining the ins and outs of domain name investing to low offers, but in this case I decided to make a comparison to Bitcoin. Domain names are digital assets, much like Bitcoin and people invest in them because they appreciate in value. They take a risk and expect a return on their investment. Let's say someone bought Bitcoin when it was $1.00, do you really think that they should sell it to you today for $1.00? Of course not! Domains with History
There's no recorded sales data on any of our top 10 domains today, however some of these were at one time in use by endusers.
According to archive.org it would appear that number 2 on the list (solutionsgroup.com) was at one time a marketing and finance company of some kind, and wow their website looked amazing.
Number 3 on the list folkroots.com was at one time an informational site as they put it, "about Appalachian music, Missippi Delta blues, and other forms of American roots music."
Number 5 (anvis.com) was actually the name of an ISP offering internet dialup access.
Number 9 (thcshop.com) as you might have guessed was at one point selling growing kits and other marijuana related items.
Finally, number 10 on the list (writeit.com) was what appears to be a blog of some kind.
About the Names
Today's list breaks down to 9 .com domains and 1 .co domain. Although .com claimed the majority of the spots on the list, .co did win out at number 1. I'm guessing that it was a leftover sale from the Sedo .co auction.
