How to use DotA 2 Cavern Crawl while zoomed out?

I can only use Cavern crawl while zoomed it, however this is a terrible user experience. I can see everything just fine zoomed out, zooming in barely makes a difference, except to the use experience. So I'd like to stay zoomed out (looking at the whole map instead of focused on 1/3). Recently I also wasted three swaps because the control scheme is so shitty. I still don't know how it works.

Or are swaps limited to the 1/3 regions? In that case it makes a little more sense. But even with that restriction there's no benefit to zooming in.
