In a one vs one battle, I think the Lion will easily win. Although the buffalo has strength and horns, the lion will be able to bite and drag the buffalo down. I've seen an epic battle between some Lions, a Buffalo herd and some crocs at the "Battle at Kruger" the Buffalo were victorious, but as I said, if it was a one vs one death match, I don't think the buffalo would stand a chance.
