Little Missy - "King Poyaviack" - Music, Improvisation, Jazz, Rock - UPDATED LINK

I've referred to my husband Marek and his previous musical projects, "Reflection" and "King Poyaviack," both of which started while he was living in Brooklyn and Queens, in the early 1990s. They released a CD under each project name at the time; first "Reflection," and later, "King Poyaviack."

Both projects were 100% pure improvisation, consisted of an ever-evolving lineup of Polish musicians, and "King Poyaviack" became popular enough, and built enough of a following, that they performed in clubs all over the city, including several performances at Roxy Studios, with a live audience, and at the legendary CBGBs.

Because it was pure improv, over time they drew the notice of a lot of other musicians, and as a result a number of phenomenal musicians have played with them over the years.

As just one example, on the far right in the above photo is Jacek Puchalski, who is known as one of the finest jazz guitarists (if not the finest) in all of Poland. He is also a fine poet, and vocalist, and an exceptionally nice guy. ;-)

King Poyaviack has enough live recorded music to warrant at least a dozen or more albums, good ones, if we can ever get them out of post-production mixing limbo. ;-)

There is, in fact, a full concert video of "King Poyaviack - Live at CBGBs," which will, hopefully, one day be actually released, if our sound guys ever finish mixing the damned thing. It's a very good concert, and deserves to be seen, preferably while the guys involved are still around to enjoy it. Great stuff.

"King Poyaviack" still occasionally convenes when we visit New York, and even more occasionally actually records together. I took the photo above, of Marek and a few of the guys setting up for the recording session that became "Live at Roxy 9," in April 2012.

We had performed at a benefit concert a few months earlier, for our close friend, band mate and sound man (who is also an excellent guitarist and a GREAT bass player) Maciek, after he was diagnosed with cancer; and this session was mostly the same lineup.

For the record, "poyaviack" is a nonsense made-up Polish word, so "King Poyaviack" loosely translates to "King of appearances."

"King Poyaviack" also serves as one of Marek's nicknames, since it was he who started the project, and initially they met and recorded in his music store, "MIT Music, Inc.," in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Which is why the project only convenes when we're in New York, as without Marek, it isn't "King Poyaviack." He was and remains the heart of the group.

We did have one recording session in our home in Largo, Florida, while we were still living there, and I became their first-ever singer (Marek's previous vocals were spoken word). Another story for another time.

So here for your enjoyment, I am posting what is likely the most accessible song they released on their first CD, "Little Missy."

The lead guitar on this piece is provided by their then-engineer, Mick Hanson. Suavek provided the original bass line that they built the song around, and added guitar, and Marek added his guitar as well, with all recorded as they played together in the studio.

Again, as with all their music, this song was 100% improvised, and recorded in one take. Yes, some effects, such as the wind, were added later.

Please note that the lineup I posted on Dsound is the album lineup, not just that for the song. Not all players performed on every song, although Marek played on them all, and his best friend Michael played on every song except for "Little Missy."

And yes, I am posting and uploading the song with Marek's permission, and at his request. ;-)

UPDATE: Okay, no DSound is still NOT uploading properly, so I finally gave up and used SoundCloud again. Hopefully one day DSound will be reliable. Apparently that time is not yet here.

Here is the link, and I just listened to it, so I know that it works:
