Only a Kestrel
Twinge of the Heart

I saw memory in the shape of a falcon
Pointillistic, irreverent—
Half-swooning in slow disintegration
Swooping down over the blazing hills.
Drilling passages through the thick air,
Leaving trails of whispering skin.

A nectarine wash of the sunrays
Assaulted me cloying and warm.
I fled from their fickle elation,
I shrank from their impotent form.

The avenues teeming with life
Were still, a facade of good cheer.
Frozen and shattered, the falcon
Full tore through the veil with a leer.

Crates piled up outside
The grocery, spent and ruined
Contained a trace of my pain:
Rancid they fizzled and shook
Beneath the skein of the mind.

Focus, a falconine claw
In the spiraling locus of sight
Shot out to seize the damp boxes,
Sought to retreive the dim light.

No rest, in the clutches of anger,
No sleep, in the grasp of fear.
I watched the great kestrel a-pining
And it saw through me as I drew near.

Its eyes were shattering gems,
The beak, a cobble of glass.
A moment I stared and all changed,
In a flurry of feathering mass.

Colors hypnotic and glum
Put out the sun with a flourish of stripes
Drawn across the clouds
Hurled haphazard across the dying town
To shine its eaves.

Swirling the shape chaotic with glee
Retracing the wistful trails.
Rising through shimmering waves of steam
Portentous, ineluctable—

Remembrance sweet, and sad, and soft
Swooped through the sky in the guise of a hawk;
Forever to soar, and hunt its fill
In false world of the past.

Sort:

Splendid allegorical poetry. The voice reveals submission to pain.

half fainted in slow disintegration
Frozen and shattered
It contained a trace of my pain

The metaphor represented in the kestrel, speaks to me of duality, hunter and hunted, at the same time.

The melancholy crosses the poem and the final lines reinforce the idea of duality or contrast: real and false.

Sweet, sad and soft memory.
He crossed the sky disguised as a hawk.
Forever to fly, and hunt
in the false world of the past.

Excellent poetic route of ascent to light.
I hug you, @dpend.

Hi @zeleiracordero, I'm appreciative of your insights. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment :-)

Thank you for your support and understanding. Thank you for teaching me to fly in words and understanding that they can be teachers, that they have their own world and allow us to travel and paint realities or fantasies in the mind. Thanks so much, @ d-pend.
I hug you strong, strong, strong.

This recording is encouraging to me @d-pend. I always try to get a clean recording in a quiet place but just after 10 seconds some noises interfere. The background noises work well and remind us that you are still human.

Sometimes your poems have lines that defy logic like:

I saw memory

Great... this blows my mind!!

Take a ride with the falcon down memory lane.

Enjoy

And come back again :-)

Hi @mineopoly! Yeah, for this poem, I thought it was appropriate to have some city background noise because of its subject matter. It's the irony of getting a clean recording and adding noise in on purpose. I sourced the sound from http://freesound.org, a great open-source audio site.

I'm glad you liked this particular piece! Hope you've had a nice weekend.

This poem was a paradox and still wondering about the falcons... are you hunting or are you an Atlanta fan... just kidding. I get it.

In Seoul it's difficult not to have that noise anywhere but you sourced it. Maybe I will do city sound effects on dsounds.

It was rainy all weekend...
One of our bamboo trees fell down and my wife is sick...

Looks like this weekend was good material for a poem :-)

Hope yours was too.
