In ancient Greece, both men and women wore long tunics. When a man went into battle he would have to "gird up his loins". Men would look pretty funny to us if they did this today. The Romans would place a coin in the mouth of the deceased. This was done so they could pay the Ferryman (Charon) to transport the deceased over the river Styx to the underworld. They also put a pipe down into the grave so family members could pour wine or drop food down to their loved ones.
