I think a lot of people find this hard to do because they are afraid of losing upvotes or retribution if someone takes it in a bad way. I think if you offer your dissenting opinion in the proper way it can be taken as starting a conversation as opposed to a put off. I still think one of the best ways to engage is to ask questions. If you can ask some questions and get talking to the original poster about something you will probably form a pretty solid connection.
I also thought this to be true. Of course sometimes when you want to really get your point across in a really passionate way it may be construed as being "improper"
