Helping the Homeless on a Cold Winter’s Night - with the Minneapolis MADDADS

in #dtube5 years ago

SUMMARY: On a frigid February night in 2019, I had the honor to wear green with the Minneapolis MADDADS and document their nightly routine helping the homeless.

Right away, the guys were in service mode, and I've never seen a group of gentler men. So friendly, kind, and positive, it was rare that anyone--even in the roughest shape--would refuse to take the hand these guys reached out. And I'm talking everyone, whether they had been slumped-over, short-tempered, or even a group of drug dealers on a corner.

These connections are possible by MADDADS' unique and effective role being leaders, being non-threatening, and simply being helpful. Their presence is aided by years of good will and reputation they've built in Minneapolis communities.

Wow great group of people out there doing good - thanks for documenting this and sharing. Being kind and helpful goes an awfully long way toward building up trust, and piercing through defensive/aggressive shields.

Agreed. And oftentimes it's the only way, I think, to break through to someone. I think it's near-criminal how groups like MADDADS are overlooked in lieu of advocacy groups that only know how to cause uproars. So, I thank you, @carlgnash, for not overlooking them:)
