#LivingElSalvador. Getting Our COCONUTS From The Tree Is Getting Harder and Harder.

in #dtube5 years ago

So this is how we get our coconuts down from our coconut tree. It is not a very easy process, because when they are too high to reach, which that is in most cases.
We were lucky all this time getting our coconuts down because our trees are young and are just starting to give coconuts and so the trees are not very high yet and you can actually get the coconuts from standing position or from a small ladder which we have been using.

This coconut tree is our first coconut tree which has been giving us the coconuts for a while now, so now we can't reach the coconuts with our regular ladder, so we had to ask Juan to bring his long ladder in order for us to get the coconuts down and today was the day. Yay.

While cutting down some coconuts, Juan also cleaned up the tree from all the dry branches etc, since coconut trees need some cleaning maintenance when the branches are dry. It is not very healthy to cut the branches when they are still green or even a little green.
The dry branches fall off the tree most of the time on their own, which probably is the best way to do it, but sometimes they don't and you still have to clean all the other dry parts of around the tree.

Because the coconuts are really heavy, it makes it really hard to stand high on the ladder and holding the machete in one hand and then the really heavy coconut branch in the other hand. It is almost a guaranteed fall.

One way to do it is by grabbing the coconuts one by one by twisting them, which is also a bit complicated when you stand on top of the ladder and then dropping the coconuts down and someone catching from the bottom.

The other option is to tie it to the rope and slowly bring it the coconuts down, like we did the rest of the coconuts.

The third option is to get someone who knows how to climb the coconut tree (when they are too high to reach from a ladder) and still do it the same way as we did, by tying the coconuts to the rope.
There are not very many people that can do that anymore and so it is a good business for those that can and they can make a living from it because they are greatly needed for their job.

After cutting down three branches and cleaning up the coconut tree it was time to enjoy some of those delicious coconuts.
Now we enjoy the coconuts daily again. Yummy.

Hope you enjoyed the video in which you met Juan who is our family and who is just awesome. Wish you all a wonderful weekend, my awesome friends.

Love @joalvarez.

Nice post! Picking coconuts is a regular challenge here in Thailand. No ladder here though; the young boys climb up barefoot with a rope to support them... they are as agile as little monkeys, with a razor sharp machete strapped on.

Ever thought of joining us in the @ecotrain community? Great supportive, eco-green group from all around the world. Im betting @eco-alex has more than a few hairy coconut stories to share with you from India. 😊
