The Life of A Nursing Female Rabbit

in #dtube5 years ago

Anyone who has ever owned a doe (female rabbit) that just put to bed will think she is uncaring because it is difficult to see her feed her kits and she also stays away after from the next box and sometimes acts as if she ignores them. This is however not the case as we will learn in the post.

Making A Home

The doe creates a nest for her litters some days before they are born that is why you should put the nest box inside her cage at the right time so that she can familiarize herself with it and feel comfortable enough to build her nest in it. The nest box is usually filled with any of grass, shredded paper, rag or anything she can feel comfortable with. She will normally pull her fur and add them to the make up in nest, this helps to hide the kits and also create warmth for them. Not all female rabbits follow the steps of preparing their nest box especially first time moms.

Feeding In Secrecy

The nursing doe will normally feed the kits once or twice daily and that is sufficient for the kits for the next 24 hours. They feed their kits standing over them and the kits will try to grab a teeth / nipple / breast and suck on them. She normally feeds them in the dark when she feels it is safe to do that and will typically leave the nest box if she feels there is a treat approaching. In the wild they will normally move away from the nest to lure predators away from the nest, that is why they replicate the same characteristics when they are in a cage. That is why it is almost impossible to see a doe feeding her kits at the early stage after birth. To be sure the doe is feeding her kits all you have to do is observe if the tummies of the kits are very full and well-rounded as if they were pumped. Lol.

Cleaning The Kits Poo

Kits when they are newly born don’t have an elimination reflex which means they can’t poo on their own. The mom has to lick their bellies and bum bum / ass / bottoms (whichever you understand better, lol) to stimulate them to poo. Like I mentioned earlier, this is hard to see because she doesn’t want any attraction to her kits. Another thing I must mention is that not all does follow these procedures especially first time moms. I remember complaining about Nancy on this post https://steemit.com/life/@ketcom/i-am-having-issues-with-nancy last month. She was wee weeing (urinating inside the nest box). It is cheering to announce that the kits come out of the nest box once their eyes are open and they are strong enough to climb out. If that happens to one or two of them then it is time to remove the nest box. From my personal experience, the nest box goes out from 12 to 16 days.

In Conclusion

The doe may not appear to be caring because you are not seeing her do that after the kits are born, but I tell you they are very good moms and are doing their best for the kits in secret and that is it, the life of a nursing mom is that of life full of secrecy in a bid to protect her young ones.
