It’s Gardening Time! Sowing Lettuce & Asian Greens 🌿🌱
Tis time! Tis time to sow seeds!
The chickweed (Stellaria media) is flowering! I even saw a honeybee on its flowers today. We are having the characteristic shifty weather of spring- very warm one day and back to freezing the next. Today was a beautiful day and we prepped some garden beds and sowed seeds!
We prepped some beds outside, shaping them and weeding out anything that grows now- mostly chickweed and some grass. Then we prepped some beds inside the small high tunnel in which I sowed an Asian green mix and Ini sowed some lettuce seeds!
We grow our own food because nothing beats the farm fresh food grown by your own hand!
We know what goes into the soil and that it’s 100% organic! Working the soil is a treat unto itself. Working in soil is known to alleviate depression and who doesn’t get a little SAD (seasonal affective disorder) during a long winter?
When I can get back to digging my hands into slightly warm soil, it’s a good time! It reminds me of how much pleasure I get in gardening. It reminds me why I’ve chosen this life. The promise of fresh food soon to grow is icing on the cake as I enjoy the full process.
It was also really cool to spy so many worms in the soil! Each year we “seed” the beds with handfuls of worms and their compost and they’re everywhere now.

From a rocky glade mountain top, we’re starting to see the fruits of our labor and all of the beautiful soil we’ve worked hard to create, along with help from our decomposer friends, amendments and cover crops.

This looks amazing, you've got those beds so neat and tidy. I am extremely envious that you are wearing summer clothes and sniffing dirt, plus chickweed and a bee!! If I was there I would just move into your grow tunnel and you'd never get rid of me. This is truly inspiring and totally awesome!
Hehehe 💚🌿 you are welcome in our high tunnels anytime!! This is the first time also that I feel like these beds are finally looking and feeling like proper garden beds!!! So much work has gone into prepping this soil and it felt great to feel that our work is paying off 🌱🌱🌱💚💚💚

Chickweed is some prolific stuff! It's everywhere. Melissa is begging me to mow, and I can't make myself do it. All the chickweed and dandelions and henbit are super good for the bees.

Yay!!! This is so beautiful!!! I know you are so excited for this season. You guys have worked so hard, it's all beginning to come together. You'll have lettuce before you know it. The beds look perfect and with those worms your high tunnel will soon look like the Garden of Eden ;) oxox Love you!

Funny, on the seasonal change over I've been sowing lettuce and pak choy! I'm doing it in the wicking beds as it's still a bit dry in the garden proper - though it DID rain yesterday, YAY.
Unlike you, we can grow these greens all the way through - slower, maybe, in winter, but still.
Loving that high tunnel! Great to see it being used after all that hard work setting it up.

Pakchoy from wicking beds at the moment... so much!!! Never on your scale though... still, might have to get the pakchoy coming out of ears shot!!
