Okay, this is my last EOS review for a while on social platforms because I’ve just done two, but I’m trying to clear up any misconceptions and concerns and be as comprehensive as I can.
In this review, I went back over all the EOS apps I covered and found a few more since many EOS users were upset with the review which I wasn’t surprised by. Nonetheless, I will at least do my due diligence of correcting any errors and being as comprehensive as possible in my review. There were also requests that I look at multiple wallets so please list those in the comments for my next review covering EOS wallets. I will be focusing on social platforms, but if something doesn’t perfectly fit within that bounds, know this is based on recommendations or listings of EOS platforms under “social” or “other” on dapp lists with EOS included like https://dappradar.com, https://www.stateofthedapps.com, and https://app.co/eos

The results speak for them self. A lot of the sites/applications are unusable, lacking any real community, the concepts are too niche, or they are just way too early along. Plus needing to use Scatter again rules out the opportunity for good mobile usage. People suggest using a different wallet for mobile which seems like a huge hassle to me even if you just import keys. The only usable application is Trybe and I guess EOS Discussions which are still amateur. While EOS is still worth a decent amount, I wouldn’t invest in it or rely on the dapps coming out of its network. Also, I was unimpressed by the username limitation. I only was able to get @scottbusine instead of my full username on EOS so likely no one will find me when searching for me too. I will also say that some of these issues aren’t specific to EOS. Steem isn’t the easiest to get set up on, but it has profitability, a large community, and once you get started it’s easy to go from there and get a mobile app which you can use with no need for a mobile wallet or any hassles. Many BCH and ETH platforms also require you to pay per tip or transaction which I also think won’t be used much in the future because that model is unrealistic to expect people to adopt. If there are EOS dapps running the same model, I will have the same criticism.

You are likely not going to make it if your community is almost non-existing, you have to tip to like something, you must approve everything you do, you need KYC to use a platform, or the platform isn’t functioning properly.

Interestingly enough, one prominent criticism was that some of these platforms weren’t eligible to be considered social platforms. Some said Hirevibes wasn’t even though it’s as close to Linkedin as you could get on EOS that I’ve seen and was listed as a social platform, some said BOID wasn’t even though it has a social layer. I’m okay to agree with these people as it just means there were even less working EOS social dapps than I thought which just shows EOS is lacking. They accuse me of not knowing what a social application is to somehow discredit the rest of the review when I got these listed off of EOS wallets and EOS dapp communities which I find ironic and again show that maybe this is just a reflection of the EOS community. I digress though, let’s dive in.

I will also review some EOS wallets in the future to put that debate to rest too. Again, I must state that I won’t test platforms in another language or those that aren’t working correctly. Someone said why not translate it or just go over the whitepaper? It should be obvious why, but I’m reviewing applications that are viable for an English audience and that are fully functional and usable by me. I’ll also say if they have less than 100 users, it’s not worth reviewing either. If that upsets you, then you don’t have to continue reading and can disregard the review. This is for people who are thinking “maybe I’ll try the EOS network of applications, what’s available and how operable are they?”

Someone pointed out that the majority of EOS dapps are there to rake in money from gamblers. While Scatter, for example, lists 6 social apps, 3 of which don’t work or are considered not to be social apps by many, and has 64 gambling applications, it pretty much speaks for itself. Do note that it is a non-sequitur to say that because I didn’t look at an application that isn’t even a social application or I looked at one that you don’t consider a social application based on the EOS community suggestions and dapp listings to then say that the actual social platforms reviewed are illegitimate.

Trybe – I will cover the issues on Trybe in great depth because it’s the best platform on EOS and I want it to improve.

I’ll remove anything that is explicitly attributed to Scatter to keep wallet issues and platform issues separate even though one of the biggest issues for me was with wallet interoperability on Trybe.
Trybe is lacking community, profitability, and they don’t have many basics in place like cover images, discovery feed for social posts. People don’t interact with much and only really on blogs. Newsfeed posts get 0 engagement and they don’t show up in the discovery newsfeed or anywhere that I could find aside from your own profile page. Most articles within their category become “Top Rated” and go into the “Most Popular” section because of the lack of content. The most popular posts of all time are typically several months old. They claim approvals are only to check for plagiarism and copyright, but that’s not a good enough reason for me. The design and speed have greatly improved. I was under the impression they would only do approvals this during its early stages and eventually decentralize more, but that hasn’t happened in over a year and there seems to be no notion that it will be happening. I appreciate wall posts and allowing you to use slideshows etc. as you would find on Linkedin. There can be something to find after overcoming the initial challenge and or you don’t care about earning Trybe and just want to use this as a social platform. Coming back to the platform it does seem like the community is back, but all the issues are otherwise still there. I think some people are back now because there was an update to the UI which looks great, but it’s not enough to keep me. I think Trybe is the best EOS dapps hands down and aside from it losing almost all its value in its first year going from 0.0007 to 0.00001 now it could have a chance on just the social platform side of things if the backend is made much easier for regular users to integrate more easily. Also, Notifications don’t work right, you can’t go to the post they commented on. I’ve invited the founder to clear any of this up, but no luck so far.

I think Trybe is better than a lot of platforms and I will use it, but if they don’t plan to change these things, then it’s simply not going to be mass adopted. At the end of the day, people are looking for earning a profit which you can only do on Steem and Publish0x, decentralization which you only see on Steem and a bit on Minds, ease of use which I believe is better on Steem and best on Publish0x and Minds, but absolutely not on Trybe. https://trybe.one/

EOS.Discussions – Someone complained that I didn’t include this even though it’s not listed on any dapp listings or EOS social platform searches. I did previously review this in my comprehensive blockchain review, but I’ll re-review it here - It oddly allows you to post anonymously which I feel is problematic and could allow for relentless spam but makes sense since so many people won’t bother to get an EOS wallet. After coming back to it a year later and testing it, I had a smoother experience using it, but it still didn’t make the cut for me lacking so much functionality and having barely changed. It also lacks a community partly due to the lack of features. You can’t get the username you might want since you are limited to your EOS account, you can’t add a profile picture or even have your own profile page. Everything is just based on topics which makes it hard to know if you’re talking with the right person or just an anonymous account. Again, I don’t like signing tons of transactions as most EOS dapps require. This could have potential in the future, but it’s currently bare bones. Sense – Only usable on mobile, which is usually a turn off for me, but considering there are 5000+ download it’s worth checking it out. I’m not a fan of calling a messenger platform a social media application. Going through various channels of which there are like 12, there was only 1 person online on each channel and the majority of the messages were “hey” or “hi”. Enjoy. https://www.sense.chat
Voice - This is the only platform that could have potential on EOS. It’s not out yet though, but it seems like it could be promising. This is just a hope and a wish for now. https://voice.com/
Murmur – A bit over 100 active users only and requires Scatter for everything you do unless you whitelist. To me it’s just a choppy awkward experience and again there is such a tiny community here. I’ll admit the community that is there is active, but it’s mostly in Spanish or low-quality spam posts by the same people. Decentium - I like the setup, but again you need Scatter, you can scroll through all this month’s post in one page basically. There were 22 posts in August. You also need to tip your money to other users which is a hard no for me. This is a no go. https://decentium.org/

Nebula - Barely any users, most posts are like “hello world” or “testing.” One user even ironically commented on how most EOS dapps are gambling and that Nebula is confusing. It’s very preliminary and not worth your time. https://app.nebulaprotocol.com

DabbleCafe - Only in another language. Not viable. http://dabble.cafe/

Ono - Couldn’t load the site. Can’t test. https://www.ono.chat/

BOID - There were only 600 or so active users – Several people have complained and said it’s not even a real social platform so we can safely disregard this. It has a social layer to it, but it’s definitely not a social application. https://app.boid.com/

LoreFree – In another language and mainly based around knowledge sharing more so than a social community. (Some may consider this not relevant to include) - https://lorefree.com/

Lumeos – Too niche for a social platform (only polling and surveys). You can earn crypto, but it’s hardly a social platform. Someone may be upset that I even listed this claiming it’s not social, but it’s a “social polling app” and is listed by Dappradar.com. https://lumeos.io

Karma – Good concept but way too niche as a platform. Their value has dropped 10x since inception and looks like it’s going the same route as Trybe. It’s only usable on mobile. When I tried registering it said, “problem trying to create an account.” Tried again and it didn’t work at all. Also the reason I say it’s too niche is because on the website they say “Published content must have the value of goodness” whatever that means - https://www.karmaapp.io
