What drinks from my pool?

What drinks from my pool? I've ALWAYS wondered what drinks from my pool while I'm asleep - Are there animals that drink from your pool while you're asleep? In my overnight pool watch observation time lapse, I finally decided to find out...What drinks from YOUR pool? (Comment Below)

  • For the technically minded - The (overnight) time lapse was filmed with all house lights turned back off, so as not to deter any shy animals. Exposure intervals were 1 minute (Auto mode with only WB adjustment)...I tried 11 seconds on the previous night (night of filming the video) but it was mostly all black - That was using f2.8 and 1600 ISO. The experiment may be worth repeating during the next full moon where ambient light is far better...

Backyard swimming pools are synonymous with summer fun. But they can be deadly for wildlife. Our swimming pool is properly surrounded by a pool fence, but if your swimming pool isn't - Here are a few ways you can provide Pool safety for wild animals - Simple ways to save the lives of your wild neighbours.

Pool drownings are tragic, because they are preventable. Animals—from mice to lizards, frogs and snakes, or ducks, fledgling birds and even pets—can find themselves in a pool with no way to escape.

Wild animal babies are particularly at risk; their curiosity about these neighborhood bodies of water can take them perilously close to the edge.

Pool precautions :
A few simple pool precautions can help dramatically lower the danger to animals:

When building a pool, design lounge ledges along the sides just below the water's surface, providing shallow areas from which animals can easily escape.

Build a fence around the pool (This is now a legal safety requirement in most countries) when constructing a swimming pool.

Install one or more water-exit devices. Place these buoyant devices in the water along the pool's edge to allow animals to get out on their own.

Place knotted nylon ropes along the sides, securing them to the pool edge. Make sure the knot is at the water's surface, so the animal can more easily climb out. (This technique only works for climbing animals such as mice and possums.)

In case of an emergency
If an animal decides to take a dip in your pool before you have had the chance to install a ramp, log or rope, try one of these rescue techniques;

Birds, frogs and other small animals: Scoop them out with a net or pool skimmer. If you don’t have a skimmer handy, try the bristled end of a broom to lift them up and out of the pool.

Larger animals: Use a partially deflated float as a makeshift ramp. Anchor the ramp on the pool steps with a weight such as a cinderblock or tie it to the ladder rail.

For any animal: Always use caution to avoid being bitten! (or stung)

Provide an alternative
If you find that wild guests frequent your pool, you may want to consider building them a spa of their own. A wildlife pond will provide food, water or shelter for a wide variety of wild neighbours and it will bring you hours of viewing pleasure. This can be especially helpful to wildlife in areas with limited water—it will keep them from trying to drink water from your pool, which is full of chemicals that aren’t healthy.

Hahaha super cool idea mate but unfortunately the fog challenged my spotting skills a bit BUT:
I played it back with half speed and I think you missed the theft all the time: it is a big white snake laying in your pool even in daylight! There on the left ;)

The music was super nice! Even on 0,5 speed it is sooo moody.

Thanks for sharing this little experiment and "your welcome" for me spotting the water theft. Haha

Peace!

HAHAHAHA...He's our resident pool snake - He eats a lot of leaves that fall in (& for all we know - maybe the odd possum here and there?) LOL
