What is electronic mail?

Electronic mail or email for short is one of the most popular uses of the internet.Once an e-mail account is created one can send an message to just about anyone else with an email account so long as their email address is known to the sender.

Today, email is delivered using a client/server architecture. A email client program called the user agent is used for reading, preparing, sending and storing of emails in an inbox. The inbox is a storage area for safe keeping of email and is created for every user who has an email id. When the user want to send and email, he will create the mail using UA and usage the push program to send it to his email server. The email server will transfer the mail to the email server on the other and using the client MTA or client message transfer agent program. At the other end the server MTA will receive the mail and stored it on the email server. The user can then retrieve the email from the server using what is called as a pull program. The formal protocol the defines the MTA and MTA server on the internet is the SMTP protocol or the simple mail transfer protocol. Some of the popular protocols used for pulling message from a email server are the POP ( post office protocol) protocol or IMAP (internet message access protocol).
