How Does Juan Steemian Earn? Let Me Tell You of 6 Ways...

"Juan", or Juan Dela Cruz, is the Philippines and every Filipino personified. This is an English version of my previous post- Paano Ba Kumikita si Juan Steemian?

The mass asks: What is this Steemit that I seem to see everywhere and why are these people promoting it? Must be a scam!.

Eng. Wrong. Steemit is many things but is most definitely NOT a scam. First of all, there won't be any registration fees, annual fees, midyear fees, anniversary fees or whatever fees you can think of. Secondly, a good number of Filipinos in the platform can attest that we do earn from the platform. I am one of these together with @deveerei, @luvabi, @jeanelleybee, @beng05 and the many other Pinoys in the Steemph discord server, too.

I understand though why there would be many questions around the platform. Been there, done that. It is but normal to question things one does not fully understand. So let me share with you, to the best of my abilities, the many ways to earn here.

Ways to Earn 1: Create a Blog/Post

This is probably the most popular, and the easiest way to earn. It is a blogging and social-media site after all.

What to post? The list is long! There are those who post:
  • Photos
  • Meme
  • Poetry
  • Short Story
  • Drawings, paintings, and other visual arts (or crafts)
  • Music
  • Video Blogs
  • Research, Insights and/or random musings.

The list can go on and on and on. If you can think it, then you can post it!

How exactly does one earn from posting?

When other users in the platform appreciate your work and your post receives upvotes (similar to the "like" feature on Facebook), an equivalent dollar value is shown as a reward. The more number and upvote-weight you receive, the higher the reward is as well.

How much does one earn from posts? This differs with these factors at play- votes received and steem/sbd prices.

A friendly reminder on this- the community values original, quality content, so providing proper credits whenever needed and never ever plagiarize!

If you're not much into story-telling or blog posting, fret not. There are other ways to earn here.

Ways to Earn 2: Read and Comment on Other's Posts

Wait, let me clarify that. It doesn't mean that doing 10,000 comments per day will make you rich. Just like blog posting, comments will receive rewards based on upvotes.

You must have had this thought- Oh no, is this just a popularity contest? Not really. To be honest, basing it from my experience here, people would recognize well-thought of comments, and would most likely receive well-deserved votes.

Let me show you an example.

Rewards: Rewards (in SBD) of the corresponding comment
Votes&Replies: Total net votes & Total child comments(Replies)

From this report by @chinadaily na ito, I did 113 comments with $68 rewards at the time.

Makes me wonder, maybe I should do comments full-time instead, with the goal to be the Best Commentator for 2018. Haha!

Seriously though, I've had comments who received more rewards than some of my blog posts. The one I remember most is a $12 reward for a comment upvote. Not bad eh?

In here, the chatty ones win. Hahaha.

Ways to Earn 3: Join Contests

As a certified contestant (of contests of all types), I was ecstatic to learn of contests here. Here are some of those I was able to join:

Some contests were won, but come to thunk of it, simply joining is fun as it drives creativity!

Or is it the prize that squeezes creativity out of us? Haha.

Here are some of my work for contests entry that I love.

There are lots of contests in steemit such as- *Photo contest, Singing contest (not a joke), Poetry Contest, Short-Story Writing Contest, and many more.. You are most likely to find them under the tag 'contest'.

Click the icon of your picture or avatar on the upper-right corner of your Steemit page, then choose 'Feed'.

This will take you to your home feed where you'll find posts/resteems of those you follow. On the right side you'll find'Tags and Topics'. Look for the tag 'contest' or challenge, all posts using this tag will then show.

The fine author @jznsamuel made a list of contests run here, I'm just unsure if all are still ongoing. Could still be worthwhile to check post List of All Contests/ Giveaways, Participate to Win Free Steem/SBD.

What I'm sure of is that lots of many other contests has emerged since.

Ways to Earn 4: Offer Services in Exchange of Steem or SBD

If you have worked freelance or on commission before, this is something similar to it. Many here would as for expert help to accomplish some of the tasks they need. Example, if you are a web-developer and someone has a project that fits your skill-set perfectly, they can consider you to complete a task for them. Others would be in need of logos, paintings, poetry, or whatever. Steemgigs sis most popular for this. If in need of experts, or if you'd want to offer your services, you can find steemgigs ondiscord.

Ways to Earn 5: Curation

This is another beauty of steemit, all active users in the platform are rewarded either by authoring or curation.

What is curation? It's like having the ability to spot early on high quality posts that would make it in the trending page.

How it works? Upvote a post and you'll get a portion of the curation rewards for that post!

Your curation reward depends on-
  • Your Available Steem Power
  • Post Reward
  • Timing on Upvote

To know more about these, look at the FAQ curation section.

Nose and brain bleed? Hahaha, I know right? Wait let me attempt to explain.

The post reward is split into this- 75% to the author and 25% to curator/s. So the 75% is solely received by the writer. The 25% for curator/s can be split if vote was casted within the first 30 minutes of publishing. This is how it is split between author and curator within the first 30-minutes:

  • Upvote right after posting, 100% goes to the writer.
  • Within the first 3-minutes, 90% to the writer and 10% to the curator.
  • Between 3-15 minutes from posting, 50/50. Sibling love.
  • Between 15- 27 minutes 10% for the writer and 90% for the curator
  • Votes after 30 minutes, 100% goes to the curator.

Let's try to put some values. Example, post earns $40. So the 75% to the writer, that's $30. The remaining $10will be split this way:

  • Upvote right after posting, $10 to the writer.
  • Within the first 3-minutes, $9 to writer and $1 to curator.
  • Between 3-15 minutes from posting, 50/50, $5 each.
  • Between 15- 27 minutes , $1 to writer and $9 to curator
  • Votes after 30 minutes, , $10 to curator.

This sample is in the assumption that all the curators are lumped as one. But in reality, since people would vote at different times, with different steem power also, the Math is way more complicated.

As for me, I'm happy to know the basics and earn. Haha.

Ways to Earn 6: Invest in Steem/ SBD

This is for investors, who see the value in the platform and trusts that their money will be so much more should they put it on Steem or SBD now. Both are cryptocurrencies used in the platform, and are expected to increase in value as the platform goes mainstream. I did buy some when Steem was at $0.33 in May 2017. At current prices, that amount has now grown 10 times over!

Investing in Steem and locking it up as STEEM POWER strengthen your influence in the platform as this gives your votes more dollar-value in terms of rewards. It also increases your stake in the curation rewards, giving you the chance to get more from the curation rewards pie.

Disclaimer: Not a financial advise. Simply sharing.

That's all I have for now. If you have other tricks up your sleeve, I hope you won't mind sharing these?

Thank you Dreamiely for sharing! This will help me a lot as a new user on steem!

Ahm... new? Haha

Pretty good summary of how Steemit works. A better way to play the game???

exactly true

Yes, and to be a good player we need to know how to play first. This post from @dreamiely
is the best, it is so informative and easy to understand.

I personally wouldn't put it that way, "play the game". Rather, I think of it as having the options presented on the many possibilities in earning here.

There are those also who really are happy just having a venue to express themselves, and doesn't really give much importance on the reward side.

Yamapan AHAHAHAHA!

Anu dawwww? Haahhaha

Thank you @dreamiely for guiding us newbies and giving us options on how to make our way on steemit! Will be following your future posts :D

You're always welcome! This is something the community does- help and uplift each other. Thank you also for dropping by :)

I learn a lot from this blog, thanks @dreamiely
