RE: Plastic, plastic everywhere but not for African recyclers

in #ecology5 years ago

Plastic recycling I believe is a very reasonable thing to do, it prevents plastic waste being all over the place, this is the one thing all people can see and apart of course are all the positive environmental aspects that this recycling can address. But it seems there are people who are against it, here in Honduras at least in the city where I live there are a number of people who made their living by collecting plastic refuse and selling it to recyclers, but then the recyclers cut what they were paying to these people for plastic in half, this resulted in two things, people stopped picking up plastic from the streets yards etc because it was no longer economically attractive, and now the city is dirtier, in the end this results in plastic ending up in the sea or rivers.

Wow, very interesting insights on your own situation. I never thought about this issue.

I guess a solution would be to elect someone that would care about these issues and of course to educate the community as these are the one that need to make the change.

Why do you have to elect someone to care? Why can't people take responsibility for themselves and just pick up the stuff and recycle it.

That is one part of the issue. Self awareness and respect of the environment.
But also, you need cleaners as in any city in the world to make the daily cleaning. As if there is some trash, people unfortunately think "It is already dirty so my little piece of trash is not going to change anything"

The cause is of course people's irresponsibility in throwing plastic trash all over the place, but the people who do collect this trash play an important part in solving the problem, by reducing their incomes the problem is increased.

Indeed, this has « cut » the transition phase between their job and personal responsibility.
