ecoTrain question of the week tie-up post. What is self respect and how can we nurture it?

in #ecotrain5 years ago (edited)

This week i have had an education. This is the first QOTW that I have not written on because this is a topic that I am not comfortable with. I have learned SO much from reading the answers to this question that I am pretty blown away by the quality of the posts. You are all awesome and have so much combined wisdom and knowledge that I can only say, THANK YOU for writing such quality posts!

If you are someone who puts others before you, or recoils when I say the word boundaries then you may have arrived at the best resource you are likely to stumble upon on Steem to understand Self Respect! If i had to choose one topic that I think i understand the least then i choose this!

Thank you to all who took part! Don't miss next weeks QOTW which will join forces with 1UP for rewards and token air drops for the best answers. More on that on my next post!

Self Respect vs Self-Esteem vs Ego

As I mentioned in the video, there are a variety of things that are all roughly in this same realm, but are certainly different. I found an article on MindValley that did a great job breaking down some of these differences:

How do we nurture Self Respect?

I would say that the best way to nurture self respect is to act/speak in alignment with our values & principles. Then, every time we act/speak in alignment, celebrating it.

Whenever we set a goal and accomplish it, that builds self respect. Whenever we learn something new, we build self respect. Whenever we do something we didn't think we could, we build self respect... Rather, when we do these things, we create an opportunity to build self respect, if we choose to acknowledge those things :-)

The first thing that comes up for me when I ask myself this question is:

Listening to self.

Respect is all about boundaries and honoring each other - it is the dance between personal autonomy & not treading on others while heeding that small voice inside.

The reason I bring up Listening to self as a key component is because when we respect ourselves, we retain confidence and form a habit of taking care of ourselves by prioritizing ourselves. I am not talking in a selfish way, where our self-directed actions disrespect another or even totally disregard our relations, but in giving space to our inner voice so that we live from our place of truth.

@zen-art

I hope you are enjoying your Samhain people and having a blessed and relaxing time of contemplation and quiet. Hopefully, I will be doing a post about it tomorrow, so fingers crossed that I create enough time for it. Today, a topic that is closely related to the energy of Samhain, self-respect. @eco-alex sure did make a perfect theme for this week with it because whenever we start working on ourselves and asking those big questions about who we are, there is no point in avoiding the subject of do we respect ourselves for who we are. Do you respect yourself? Do you know what that even means?

We will go over 3 things in this post, knowing yourself, loving yourself and respecting yourself. Those three things are interconnected and one can not truly be expressed and experienced without the other two. It may exist but it does not shine to the fullest if it stands alone and is not backed by the others.

@artemislives

It took me at least the first 5 years in Thailand to stop ranting about the endless structured respect rituals. What was charming as a tourist frankly irritated and upset me as I began to understand it, after the initial gloss and romance of being here had worn off.

Thai "respect" falls into three distinct categories:

  • Respect that one is entitled to by birthright (ie royalty, nobility etc)
  • Respect that one is entitled to through age or seniority (which really means accumulated experience)
  • And respect that one earns through the merit of one's actions.

Respect is shown through a "wai" or the even more submissive-respectful "krub".

@trucklife-family

We all seek to be respected by others, it is seen as the ultimate honour to gain some one's respect, to know that some one is acknowledging you and all that you have done for those around you, for your community, your tribe. But that respect, really means nothing if you do not respect yourself first.

They say that respect is earned and sure, that may be true when it comes to respecting others, but self respect is something we are born with. It is something that I see in my children, the way they carry themselves, they way the just get on and do what they wish to do. When there is no one there to interfere, to make them doubt themselves, They believe that they can do anything. They are very comfortable with who they are and have no problem accepting themselves. They only time I have heard them voice any doubt, is when they have repeated what some one else has said to them.

@porters

@eco-alex posed a question this week

What is self respect and how can we nurture it?

To begin with before you can respect yourself you have to know yourself. Know yourself and love and accept yourself.

Be clear about how you define your self worth and value as a human being.
What is your view of how you are living your life? Do you have a moral code?

Start examining your values, your ideals. Be honest with yourself.

When you are clear on who you are as a person, be true to yourself. Stand up for yourself. Don't let other's thoughts about you shape who you are. Watch that you are not doing things just to gain someones approval.

Be your own best advocate, never letting your mistakes or weaknesses overshadow the fact that you are worthy of love and respect.

@nainaztengra

As the saying goes

"What you think of yourself is much more important than what others think of you"

What is Self Respect

Self Respect starts with one self. Even before we can expect someone else however close to us to start respecting it is important that we are able to respect our own selves and that means the focus goes on our own Values, Morality, Honesty, Confidence and Integrity. Self Respect a small one word but to get that set in place there is a culmination of lot of values that we need to bring into our lives.

@steemflow

A set of moral values and ethics that a human posses and follow to lead a happy life with pride and dignity is self-respect.

When I came across this question, it reminded me of my life first lesson from my grand father. I only spent very little time with him but he always asked me to maintain the self respect and live the life with full dignity.

It took me quite a time to understand the basic meaning of it but, as i grown I started to take it very seriously. It is a basic requirement one should always to lead a life with head high. By following those set values, it will never happen that anything could embrassed us in front of others. These values will do not let us to loose our character. A character defines a person beahaviour and attitude towards life.

@alignment

Since we are heavily conditioned by society to doubt ourselves, we usually seek to see ourselves through others’ eyes, to borrow conclusions from society and turn blind eye to our reasoning, and to develop attitudes about certain things without dealing with them as individuals. We even reject and hide parts of ourselves that considered inappropriate by society.

On many occasions we find ourselves in situations where we have to choose between what we deeply know to be right for us and what is expected by others. There is a battle between everyone’s individual view and the collective view, a struggle between the within and the without. Starting from what to wear, which career path to take, to which worldview to adopt even to what kind of life one has, every day we make choices by which we either get closer to our true identities or fit in the molds acknowledged by society.
