Meet Bruno and JJ...

Bruno and JJ Watching the Birds or Squirrels on the Deck

These two are buds!

Bruno (the dog) is the youngest and was raised with a bunch of cats (at one time we had 6 of them all at once.) All these cats were older than Bruno. Because he would grow to be so much bigger than the cats we made sure that the cats were clearly his elders and he learned to accept his position at the bottom of the heap! He always got along really well with the cats indoors except Mama San, the chief matriarch, who didn't really want anything to do with him. Out doors he was so high energy that the cats tended to give him a bit of distance except JJ.

JJ was a wild cat who adopted us. One night he came in through our cat door and made himself at home in one of the cat beds close to the door. All the other cats seemed to accept him so we let him stay. He would come and go through the cat door during the day.

We always gave our cats a little meat treat in the morning and I offered JJ some and he took it from my hand, then I reached over to pet him and it was the petting and affection that he wanted more than the food. He soon turned into a real cuddle cat and became a part of the family.

Feeding Time for the Cats

All the other cats have died after living long and happy lives (we had five cats that lived to be over 20 years old! We started to think of our place as a home for geriatric cats!) and JJ is the last one left so now the bond between him and Bruno is even stronger.

I love seeing the two together and I hope you do too!

Somewhat timely to see this post. We are three days into training a 9 month old German Shepard rescue mix (not sure what they other breed is) who was obviously never trained to understand how to play with humans or what is a dog toy vs. something valuable. He is absolutely fascinated by our cats, but they are not too keen on him, even though they are used to our other two dogs. He wants to play with them like he would play with a dog. They, of course, are having nothing to do with that. After a few good whacks from their paws he now just looks at them and wags his tail and barks a bit, but gives them a pretty wide berth. This is one of the smartest dogs I've seen. In three days of training he is almost cured of playing with humans like other dogs. The cats are even slowly getting used to him. With luck we can have him trained well enough to adopt out in a couple of weeks if we find the right home. Too many people like the looks of a German Shepard, but have no clue about how to work with them.

Loved this post! Those 2 are great! I liked reading their stories and about how they interact. The last photos say it all. :))

Yes, I could go on and on sharing my pet photos and stories - they are such characters and it's good to see they are such good buds!

Whenever my dog sleeps on his belly, it gives me so much comfort and reassurance that he finds our home his haven. Looking at Bruno sleeping in the same position reminded me of him.

thank you for loving Bruno and sharing his pictures! I am so sure that he has a loving, happy forever home with you guys!

That is my impression too that they feel really secure if they can sack out like that with their bellies up. We got Bruno as a little puppy and he will remain with us for the rest of his days.

yeah. I had a puppy too since birth and he's now 5 years old living with my mom in the Philippines. You really get so attached and bonded to them that it gets really difficult to be parted even for awhile....

Yes, we bond pretty tight with them, especially if we get them as pups and they are good companion dogs! When I first moved away from home I had to leave my dog with my mom but she really loved her too so all was good!

They are so cool! I look at the cat has a house (box) ... and the dog?😂😂😂

What a lovely story @porters. Mama San and JJ - just beautiful kitties. Bruno is lucky to have been brought up by kitties. I think, anyway. Your feeding time is reminscent of the time in my life I lived in a house with five!

Yes having 5,let alone 6 cats at one time is a lot of cats but they each came to us in different manners and we could never send any of them away - we were just one big happy family and we had to throw a dog into the mix too! Happy Happy!

Great pictures of your lovely fur babies! I love the odd couple thing. We have a one eyed goose who has decided our big dog is her buddy. Very odd couple! It's great that you got so many years with your kitties.

Animals can be so funny when they are choosing their buddies, lots you would never have figures could be pals!
Yes I was amazed that they lasted that long and JJ is getting up in age too. I think because they were all fixed and didn't roam, plus we have a very secure yard with lots of trees in and surrounding our yard (which they never left) and we bought them inside for the night they lived to die of old age.

They're so cute @porters. Pretty cool that JJ chose you guys. It says a lot.

They are all cute, but I really love the picture of the cat in the sticks. That is an amazing picture!

A couple years ago, I was surprised how my grown dog easily accepted a rescued kitten into our family. I was expecting an "ease-in" period, but was delighted that it wasn't necessary.

Nice post.

Yes it's funny how we have this conception of the big dogs not getting along with cats but our last two German Shepards have really bonded with the cats and we use to have a couple of them that would snuggle right up with the big guy! They loved him!

Very good long lives your cats have had over the years, they must be very healthy and happy.

JJ and Bruno look to be the odd couple that get along perfectly, lovely to have a cat and dog as best friends considering you only have these two now.

Mama San looks like she took no nonsense!

Yes - "the odd couple" I really love to see them being such good buddy for they are the only ones besides us that they've got.
No one messed with Mama San!
