Der Rubin zählt neben dem Diamanten, Smaragd und Saphir zu den "großen Vier" Edelsteinen.
Wobei zu erwähnen sei, dass der Rubin und der Saphir zum Mineral Korund gehören.
Das älteste Abbaugebiet ist Sri Lanka, dort sollen schon die alten Römer und Griechen (ca. 450 v. Chr.) Rubine abgebaut haben.
Aktuell kommen die teuersten Steine aus Myanmar (Burma), diese Steine haben die "klassische" Rubinfarbe, dazu eine hohe Reinheit und erzielen damit Höchstpreise.
