Today's Weed News For October 8th 2018 #WASHINGTON

For today's weed news we go to the great state of Washington.

State officials have just publicly announced their plans to ban a lot of edibles in early 2019.

The reason? Many of them look just like regular candy and are therefore very appealing to small children.

The edibles that will be targeted are mostly infused candies including but not limited to hard candies of all shapes and sizes, all different kinds of fruit chews, gummies and jellies, as well as tart candies that resemble Sweet Tarts and such.

That really sucks you guys, I was just posting about my favorite gummies this last weekend on Smoke.io. Gummies are the shit! But they do look like something a kid would want to eat no doubt.

Even though there were already regulations in place that the state had decided on in 2012 when recreational weed was first legalized in Washington, the board decided to reevaluate some of the rules because of concerns raised by the public and some stakeholders.

This change only applies to edibles that could be very easily confused for candy because they look just like it. Therefore, baked goods or infused sodas and beverages will not be affected.

You're still going to be able to buy weed brownies. I feel like that's crucial.

The state estimates that only 9% of all the cannabis products sold in Washington is edibles. So they don't feel like this new tweak to the law will have much of a negative impact on business.

Many, like Seattle's Craft Elixirs edibles company owner Jamie Hoffman disagree.

Candied artesian fruit chews makeup are over 80% of his sales. In an interview with the Seattle Times, Hoffman said "we're hoping we're not going to be collateral damage because of mistakes by others."

I can definitely see how people like Hoffman who produce mostly candy edibles could be getting concerned.

But in the meantime, businesses can keep doing what they're doing until April 3rd 2019. So that does give people about 6 months heads up to make the changes necessary to comply with the new law and remain in business.

If anyone has any questions about the specifics of what will and will not be allowed, the Liquor and Cannabis Board said that they will be hosting a webinar on October 16th where people will be able to get their questions answered.

I feel like this problem will be better solved if they just designated adult edible gummy shapes that are for edibles only. That way people could still enjoy their favorite gummy edible and kids would know that it's not for them. But ya...

That's what's up in Washington State.
